CELEBRATING WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRY
Coinciding with International Women’s Day, NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) sponsored Women in Construction Week, March 3-9. Local chapters all over the country held events that highlighted the importance of increasing diversity in the workplace to open more doors for women in the industry. The National Women in Roofing (NWR) has teamed up with NRCA’s Roofing Day in Washington, D.C. on April 3 and will be hosting a luncheon exclusively for women in the roofing industry. Based on the success of the general session that featured an all-woman expert roofing panel held at METALCON 2018, look for this topic to be covered again this year at METALCON 2019 when we assemble in the “steel city” of Pittsburgh, PA.

PITTSBURGH - DID YOU KNOW?
Remember when we used to type out emoticons :-) before 😃 were created? The very first emoticon, the “humbly smile,” was created by Dr. Scott Fuhlman, a professor at the world-renowned Carnegie Mellon University located in Pittsburgh, over 30 years ago on September 19, 1982. To celebrate the anniversary each year, Dr. Fuhlman hands out smiley cookies at the campus. Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions and bears the name of Andrew Carnegie, the founder of what became the world's largest steel producing company by the end of the 19th century.
