A ROYAL WELCOME
Aptly known as the “Queen’s City,” Charlotte, North Carolina, proved to be a “royal” site for METALCON 2018 where exhibitors and attendees from more than 50 countries convened at the largest international event for the metal construction industry to network and discover new products, technologies and solutions together with designers, builders, developers, contractors, fabricators and suppliers.
NEW TOTAL EXPERIENCE UNVEILED
As soon as attendees and exhibitors entered the exhibit floor, they knew something was different. With everything located on the show floor, there was “a buzz” in the air for the new “ Total Experience." Launching a new format can be risky, but METALCON show director, Claire Kilcoyne, "felt it was time to shake things up." Kilcoyne explains, "With all of the exhibits and education sessions offered at an inclusive price and located in one place - all on the show floor - the new METALCON 'Total Experience' helped attendees maximize their time and return on investment." Todd Miller, a repeat exhibitor with Isaiah Industries, an Ohio-based manufacturer of roofing solutions, commented, “I really liked having the educational sessions on the floor. It added to the excitement and energy of the show.”
ENGAGING TOPICS PRESENTED
Relevant topics to the metal roofing industry were a highlight at this year’s show, including an update on steel tariffs and a panel discussion on the importance of diversity in the workplace. Former CEO of Nucor Corporation and senior trade adviser to President Trump’s Campaign, Dan DiMicco, delivered his keynote address, “ The Economic Plan for Growth and Global Competitiveness in the United States―Implications for Steel,” to a packed theatre. And for the first time at the show, women took center stage and led an all-women expert roofing panel of manufacturers and contractors. They discussed the importance of gender and generational diversity in the business, how to create a better balance in the industry, and the values of emotional intelligence, strong communication and collaboration needed to grow a sustainable and robust business.
ANNUAL GIVE BACK BENEFITS CHILDREN
Through the generosity of exhibitors and attendees, METALCON’s show management proudly presented a $3,000 check to the Steve Smith Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping families impacted by domestic violence and to promoting family health and wellness. The founder of the organization, Steve Smith, Sr., a 16-year NFL veteran and former five-time pro bowl, three-time all-pro receiver for the Carolina Panthers, kicked off the first day with his keynote address on “Perseverance, Teamwork and Overcoming Obstacles.” Autographed jerseys and footballs were raffled off at show management’s booth, The Deck, to help raise the funds.
MCA "REV 'EM UP" METAL ROOFING GAMES CELEBRATED 5 YEARS
Eight teams of two competed in five competitions earning a cash prize of $500 for each winning challenge. Top awards each day included a Daily Points Award of $750. The winning teams, both from Thomas Phoenix International, were Matt Cox and Justin Hopta, Joe Arnold and Mike Milligan. On Friday, the teams faced-off with Cox and Hopta, last year’s champions, victorious once again and took home the MCA METALCON National Metal Roofing Championship title along with the grand prize of $2,000.
