MFGA eBulletin - July 2018
From the Desk of MFGA Executive Director
    Summer's here, folks!! And while we all enjoy the splendid July that the weather folks have pitched most of us so far, summer also represents key meeting times for things that are of major interest to MFGA.
   First up, is the Federal, Provincial and Territories Agriculture Minister's meetings in Vancouver toward the end of July. MFGA was very pleased to be included in Hon. Ralph Eichler's agriculture group consultation a few weeks back and wish Manitoba's Minister of Agriculture and department leaders the very best success around that important table. For our part at the group consultation, MFGA thanked the Minister for Manitoba Agriculture's awesome support of MFGA, especially our MFGA Aquanty Project model that looks at the role of forages and grasslands in times of flood and drought ahead in the Assiniboine River Basin. Thanks to the fantastic support of AAFC's Agri Risk Initiatives, Manitoba Agriculture and a raft of project supporters, the MFGA Aquanty Project has concluded Phase 1. We hope to parlay our momentum and the valuable results of the model right into Phase 2 as part of the Federal-Provincial Canadian Agriculture Partnership over the next five years.
   On a similar forages-and-grasses-are-darn-beneficial-to-all-of-us track, MFGA also had a chance to meet with Canadian Forage and Grassland Association (CFGA) leaders and some of our provincial counterparts from across the country recently. The work CFGA is doing on the Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Program (AGGP) is very exciting and will provide an excellent baseline for the agricultural sector as we go forward. Study sites for the AGGP will be announced toward the end of 2018. I can confirm Manitoba will most definitely be a key part of this important program. Thanks to Cedric McLeod, CFGA executive director, for lassoing this project, hammering it out and including MFGA in such a great way.
   And, as July heats up, we are kicking off the promotion and advertising of our 2018 Regenerative Agriculture Conference this November in Brandon into high gear soon. Speakers are finalized and there is something of interest for all Manitoba producers regardless of production base. Check it out, register now and save yourself some deniros by enjoying our Early Bird Pricing (September 14 deadline)!
That's it for now, muchos grasses all!
Duncan Morrison,  MFGA Executive Director
MFGA Green Gold Program 2018 Highlights
Manitoba Forage and Grasslands Association (MFGA)'s Green Gold Program proclaimed June 6 as 2018 Hay Day with the best Relative Feed Value (RFV) for a first cut. Our 2018 MFGA Green Gold highlights include:
- A fairly normal start to the sampling season this year (May 25);
- Varying temperatures and moisture during the early part of the sampling period made predicting Hay Day difficult due to slow growth but fairly normal stage advancement;
- The crop averaged 24-26 inches in height by MFGA Hay Day;
- By end of testing on June 11, fields were in the early to late flowering stage;
- Cutting in most areas started the first week of June (4th-10th). Many of these fields were put up as silage with excellent harvest conditions;
- Rains after June 10 caused minimal delays to harvest due to the dry soil conditions throughout the province. Early dry hay harvest has not been difficult.

The basics of grazing management
In Manitoba, farmers and producers have adopted a number of different grazing systems  with the key component usually being the multiple pastures (paddocks) that we move animals thru. It's remarkable how moving animals from pasture to pasture makes them perform better and keeps the pastures healthy. But the potential for disaster is still there. Forgetting the basics of grazing management or not responding correctly when things don't go as anticipated, will break any grazing system. Understanding the underlying principles of good grazing will help start you in the right direction. Sound decisions determine the success of an adaptive grazing management strategy.  Read these 10 basic practices....

KAP President steps down to throw hat in political ring
Dan Mazier, who has been president of KAP for the last three-and-a-half years, has stepped down to pursue a federal nomination for the Conservative party in the riding of Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette. MFGA worked closely with Dan on some major MFGA files and interests over his term and his support and expertise was always appreciated and will be missed. MFGA wishes Dan the very best in his new endeavour. The KAP board of directors will be meeting on July 31 to discuss the process for filling the role of president.
