Integrating Brain Stimulating Exercise Into Older Adult Programming

Presented by CodySipe, PhD , Co-Founder, Functional Aging Institute (FAI)

Did you know that integrating brain-stimulating exercise movements and strategies is easier than you think? One of the rapidly growing aging population’s main concerns is developing Alzheimer’s disease. And with good reason as dementia is quickly becoming a huge threat to the health and well-being of older adults. The U.S. ranks fourth in the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and the number of cases is expected to more than triple by 2050. It is also the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S.

The latest research and and expert consensus reports clearly indicate that “brain training” software and games (like sukodu or crossword puzzles) have very limited ability to improve cognitive performance and reduce dementia risk. The best way to improve cognition and stave off Alzheimer’s is through a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise. While almost any type of exercise is good for the brain we will specifically explore exercise strategies, movements and programs that improve both functional and cognitive ability in older adults.
