Safety Corner

Entrapment and Engulfment

Provided by Board Member Katelin Standley

  • When loading bins, be sure to avoid any auger or PTOs while in motion.
  • Stay out of the grain inside a bin if you do not have safety equipment i.e., harness and safety ropes, as it acts as quicksand.
  • It is also extremely difficult to remove a person from a bin. A person buried to the waist weighs 600 pounds more than their body weight, and a person buried to the head can weigh up to 2000 pounds more than their body - making it difficult for a person to help someone else out without the use of equipment.
  • Stay safe for your loved ones. It is better to take more time to solve a bin issue than to have an accident happen.
