January 2023

Principal's Message

Greetings,

I hope your 2023 has gotten off to a great start. As we come back from break the end of the semester is fast approaching. With two weeks left before finals, this is an excellent time to refocus and set goals with our students. Goals could include overall academic achievement, academic achievement in specific classes, and completion of make up work within specific timelines. The process of discussing and setting goals may help your student transition back to school coming off of break and feel like they have a game plan leading up to the end of the semester.

On January 11th we will host Future 9th Grade Night. Many of our students will be involved in the Activity Fair from 5:15-5:50, sharing co curricular activities which our future 9th graders may be interested in getting involved in. Each year, this night kicks off our course selection process as we begin the incremental steps of building the master schedule for 2023-24.

We have added one significant change to our course selection process for this year. During the weeks between February 6th and February 17th our School Counselors will be meeting individually with each student in grades 10 and 11. These individual meetings will be pre scheduled and students will be notified via email. Each meeting will be 15 minutes. This change will allow counselors to meet face to face with each of their students in grades 10 and 11, and provide a valuable opportunity to discuss and receive guidance on course selection and post secondary planning.

For our current 9th graders, counselors will meet with all English 9 classes on February 8th and 9th. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about courses, sequences and receive guidance from a School Counselor in their classrooms.

I share these dates so that you can take advantage of the opportunity to discuss the options with your student as well as their rationale for selections.

Again, I hope your 2023 is off to a great start, and I look forward to seeing you at the many athletic and co curricular events we have in the next months.

Respectfully,

Mitch McGrath

CESA 2 Drivers Education

car-front-icon.gif

Unfortunately, CESA 2 Driver Education has temporarily closed Behind the Wheel (BTW) registrations (effective 12/06/2022) for 6 area school districts, including Monona Grove SD, due to the negative pandemic effects/impact on BTW scheduling. They will continue conducting BTW lessons for teens who were already registered for their BTW by 12/06/2022. They apologize for the inconvenience for this temporary closing of BTW registrations in our district. They will update their website, as well as MGHS, when they reopen BTW registrations.

During this time they are focusing on the students in our district they already have registered for BTW. The CESA2 classroom and online course is recognized and accepted by the DMV and DPI as an approved Driver Education course which can transfer to commercial schools for BTW instruction.

Please email them at driversedsupport@cesa2.org if you have any questions.

Their classroom and online course offerings remain the same. Here is the registration form.

Notes from the Nurse

Cold and flu season are in full swing and we are seeing numberous illnesses throughout the school. If your child is sick, please keep them home! The following is a list of symptoms that warrant students staying at home and/or communicating with their physician and or getting a COVID test, along with other respiratory tests.

  • Fever (100° or higher), chills or shaking chills. Must remain at home until 24 hours fever-free without the use of fever reducing agents
  • Nausea or Vomiting. Must remain at home for 24 hours from last episode of vomiting
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Headache (in addition to other symptoms)
  • Fatigue (in addition to other symptoms)
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose (not due to other known causes, such as allergies)
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Cough (not due to other known causes, such as a chronic cough)
  • Sore throat
  • Eye Drainage that is green/yellow and crusty
  • Rash on hands, feet or mouth not due to exposure to allergen

A reminder to all staff, students and families that latex balloons are strictly prohibited inside Monona Grove Schools including Monona Grove High School. We have students with life-threatening allergies to latex (meaning it could cause students serious injury and/or death). It is extremely important that this rule is followed. Due to students, staff and families having a difficult time distinguishing between latex and non-latex balloons we are asking that NO balloons be brought into the school.

We appreciate your help in ensuring all of our students are safe while at school!

EARLY COLLEGE CREDIT PROGRAM AND START COLLEGE NOW DEADLINES

The Early College Credit Program (ECCP) and Start College Now (SCN) programs were established to allow students to enroll at an institution of higher education in Wisconsin to take courses that lead to credit toward high school graduation. Grades earned at a postsecondary institution will likely count in the high school GPA because the district pays for the courses in most cases.

The ECCP is open to students in grades 9-12 and covers courses taken at a UW System school or private college. Courses may be taken during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. The SCN program is open to students in grades 11-12 and covers courses taken at Madison College. Courses may be taken during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Participating in ECCP/SCN may limit the number of courses a student can take at MGHS. Courses requested can’t be similar or equivalent to courses offered by the district.  Applications are available online (ECCP application link, SCN application link) and from your school counselor. If you wish to participate in ECCP/SCN, discuss your plans with your school counselor. Students must complete the application and return it to their school counselor prior to the state-mandated deadlines (please allow for ample processing time at the school level in order to meet the deadline for submission):

  • October 1st for spring courses
  • February 1st for summer courses (ECCP only)
  • March 1st for fall courses.

Prospective ECCP/SCN students must register for a full schedule of MGHS courses. Changes to their MGHS schedule will be made upon enrollment in their ECCP/SCN course and as their schedule allows. Students must meet institutional entrance requirements and are only enrolled if there is space available in the requested course.
