Greetings parents and guardians,
The high school has been abuzz for weeks, filled with students and staff involved in athletics, music and other co curriculars. In addition, many teachers come in during August to prepare for the school year. Each year at the end of August we have three days of professional development and planning. This year our focus during those three days included priority standards, assessments and social emotional learning. I was reminded again of what an honor it is to lead a staff with a growth mindset, committed to providing excellent opportunities for all students.
On Tuesday, September 3rd each grade level met for 30 minutes in the auditorium and learned about general expectations, guidelines and helpful information. I am sharing the slidedeck from those grade level meetings here. Please take time to look through the information we shared with your student and use this opportunity to discuss key points. You will note that our grading scale has shifted to include final assessments at the end of each semester. The final assessment in each class will be worth 10% of the semester grade. As a staff we took time at the beginning of the year to revisit our priority standards and develop shared understandings around what we really want students to be able to know, understand and do by the end of each course. We will continue this work throughout the semester.
We have several important dates coming up that I would like to highlight.
On Wednesday, September 11 we will hold our Activities Fair. Freshmen will be released early to explore extracurricular activities offered at MGHS. Upperclassmen will have tables set up and will be sharing information about their specific club or team and encouraging students to join. Please ask your student if they found an extracurricular activity that they would like to try this year.
Also on Wednesday, September 11 we will hold Back to School Night. I really believe that if you are coming to the high school for just one night this year, it should be for Back to School Night. You have the opportunity to go through your student’s entire schedule, meet each of your student’s teachers and hear first hand about some of the expectations and opportunities in the course. This experience can lead to many great conversations about school, specific classes and teachers throughout the school year. We will begin with a short informational session at 6:30 pm in the auditorium.
There is one final date I would like to highlight. The Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2025 will take place on Sunday, June 1, 2025. The ceremony will be held at The Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center. This information is now reflected accurately in our MGHS Calendar of Events.
I look forward to our continued partnership making 2024-25 an outstanding year for each of our students.
Respectfully,
Mitch McGrath
