Facing the Challenging Job Market In 2017

By Marvin Mendez

There can be little doubt that 2016 was a great employment year. The unemployment rate slightly decreased throughout the year, down from 4.9% in January to 4.6% in November. During 2016, recruiters hired nearly 16 million temporary and contract employees, with more than three million temporary/contract employee's working for staffing companies during an average week.

The bad news is in this competitive job market it's easy to be frustrated with your job search, as the average search can take around six months. If you want to change jobs in 2017, it's definitely time to get serious about the process.

The good news is that 61% of companies plan to increase their staff levels in 2017. The not-as-great news is that a lot of companies are looking to fill very specific positions, so your resume needs to be highlight your specific skill sets and experiences.
  • Explain the benefits of your skills: Merely stating that you can do something will not catch the attention of the recruiter/employer. Your objective is to land an interview.  Instead of listing all your qualities (e.g., disciplined, creative, problem solver), try to connect your skills with real life and work experiences and back up these qualities and strengths with examples.
  • You don't need to list all your work experience: If you have past job experiences that aren't relevant to the current opportunity, you should omit them. Mentioning that you used to work at Burger King when you were 17 is not going to help you land that senior level accounting position.
  • Analyze job advertisements: You will find plenty of useful information the employer's job ads. Employers customize their job advertisements to include specific skills sets relevant to the position. Analyze the ad to assess what skills you have relevant to the employer's needs, and adjust your resume accordingly.
  • Update your resume regularly: Add all relevant new information, as well as courses, training programs and other academic qualifications. By updating your resume regularly you have an up-to-date record of what you have done and your resume is ready for the next job opportunity.  .
  • Make friends with a Recruiter:  Connecting with a recruiter is a good way to find out what is happening in the job market from an employer's perspective, receiving assistance in tailoring your resume, prepping for interviews, and finding the perfect position for you.
By following the above steps and putting the additional effort into your resume and job hunt will make it easier to get your resume to the top of the hiring manager's stack!
