Presidents Message -

Jordan Joye

Dear Members,

August can be an interesting month. The excitement and anticipation of spring are long gone, and the fresh energy that comes with the start of the season has often been replaced by fatigue and frustration. Our teams have been working hard for months, the equipment has seen countless hours, and the course has endured everything Manitoba’s weather has thrown at it. At the same time, expectations from golfers remain high.

MGSA Turfgrass Tournament Report

What a huge success this year’s annual MGSA Turfgrass Tournament was!

First and foremost, none of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our valued sponsors, members, and guests who came out to make this two-day event so special.

To kick everything off, this year’s event featured a new Closest to the Hole format on Monday evening, with nearly 90 participants taking on the challenge and playing cross-country throughout the unique par-3 setup created by the Southwood staff. Special shoutout to Ken Keeler who got a hole-in-one during the competition! The competition was followed by a Calcutta auction, along with great food, drinks, and plenty of opportunities to network and catch up with industry friends.

Congratulations to all the winners from Monday evening, who each walked away with an extra $100 in their pockets!

Following such a great evening, the main event saw a packed house of 160 players come out for Tuesday’s tournament, making for an incredible event and a fantastic way to celebrate the MGSA’s 75th Anniversary!

A huge thank you goes out to Southwood Golf & Country Club for hosting us and helping make this year’s tournament such an unforgettable experience.

An even bigger thank you goes out to Superintendent Dustin How, MS, his assistants, and the entire Southwood team. They had the course absolutely dialed in and in fantastic shape, making it an absolute pleasure to play.

Thank you to all of the 2026 MGSA Turfgrass Tournament Sponsors!

Clean Farms Collection Program

Cleanfarms collects and recycles empty commercial-use pesticide and fertilizer containers from farmers, golf courses, and other vegetation management companies across the province. Ask your retailer/distributor for free collection bags when you purchase your products – after use, triple or pressure-rinse all of the containers, remove the paper booklets and bag them in a collection bag (one bag holds approximately 40 jugs). There are depots around the province where you can drop off full bags of empty jugs, or if you have ten or more bags, Cleanfarms will send a truck to pick them up from your course for free. A fun fact is that over 90% of all chemical jugs were collected last year, and they are turned into new products like drain tile and culverts often used on farm, in construction projects or back at golf courses!

In addition to the empty container program, every 3 years Cleanfarms provides a program with select drop-off sites to collect and dispose of all old, unwanted, commercial-grade chemicals in Manitoba.

For more information, or to order more Cleanfarms bags, please contact Patrick Le Heiget the Manitoba Program Coordinator at 204-201-0783 or leheigetp@cleanfarms.ca.
