Paid Leave Benefits Will Start for Minnesotans on January 1, 2026

Paid Leave is a new program launching for Minnesotans in 2026. It provides paid time off when a serious health condition prevents you from working, when you need time to care for a family member or a new child, for certain military-related events or for certain personal safety issues.

There are two main types of leave:

  • Family Leave to care for a family member with a serious health condition, or if you're bonding with a new baby or child in your family.
  • Medical Leave when your own serious health condition prevents you from working.

Additionally, you will be able to take leave to support a family member called to active duty, or if you or a family member are facing a significant personal safety issue.

Join IRMA and Fellow Retailers to Discuss All Things Tariffs - Impacts, Strategies, and More

Tuesday, April 29th at 4:00pm CST

You can’t read or watch the news without seeing the word “tariff” these days. And IRMA has lost count of the number of media inquiries that have come in to us over the last few weeks. While there is not much at the state level that can be done, IRMA is continuing to advocate for policies that foster the best environment for retail’s success.

Considering this, we want to hear directly from you and give you an opportunity to hear from fellow retailers on how they are dealing with the Trump administration's tariff policy changes.

Updated Form I-9 Released

On April 2, 2025, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released an updated version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Although the updated form is available, previous editions remain valid until their respective expiration date.

Key Takeaways

  • The updated Form I-9 and Instructions is Edition 01/20/25 with an expiration date of 05/31/2027. You can find the edition date at the bottom and the expiration date at the top of both the form and instructions.
  • Minor changes include:
  1. Renaming the fourth checkbox in Section 1 from “A noncitizen authorized to work” to “An alien authorized to work”.
  2. Replacing the word “gender” with “sex” in the descriptions of two List B documents.
  3. Updating form instructions appropriately to contain similar language and revising the DHS Privacy Notice.
  • Employers may continue to use the following previous editions, until their expiration date:
  1. Form I-9 (08/01/23 edition), valid until its expiration date of 05/31/2027
  2. Form I-9 (08/01/23 edition), valid until its expiration date of 07/31/2026

Note for E-Verify users: E-Verify has also been updated to replace “A noncitizen authorized to work” with “An alien authorized to work”. It is important to note that if you use a previous edition of Form I-9 and an employee selects “A noncitizen authorized to work” on the form, you must select “An alien authorized to work” in E-Verify.

Additional information about Form I-9 changes can be found on the USCIS news webpage.
