MHC connected to the VA on November 28th! We at MHC are proud to welcome the VA as our newest MHC Participant. This means that MHC is connected to all of the VA centers across the country, including the four in Missouri: Harry S. Truman Memorial VA Medical Center, Kansas City VA Medical Center, John J. Pershing VA Medical Center, and VA St. Louis Health Care System. Having the VA connected to the MHC network will allow VA physicians access to a more complete health record of their patient, so they are able to provide the highest quality health care that our veterans deserve.

The MHC Annual Connection kicked off with the morning program detailing exciting updates and informative discussions to optimize their health information exchange (HIE). The round table discussions provided Participants and MHC with significant information about how the HIE network and services can facilitate better care while meeting initiatives. The focus of the Annual Connection was to optimize MHC services to demonstrate all of the benefits of the connection to MHC and participating in a HIE. During this time, we also planned for what is ahead for MHC in 2019.

MHC Transitions to Consent to Access (C2A) Model
|
|
What is Consent to Access?
- C2A allows the patient more control over their health information by allowing them to choose which health care providers can access their information instead of all providers losing access with a global opt-out.
- C2A is still an opt-in consent model.
- With C2A, the organization must ask if they can access the patient's information through MHC instead of asking to share information.
How does this affect my organization?
- MHC Participants must disclose health information to MHC for MHC to store and maintain.
- MHC will make this information available to the MHC Particpants that have C2A for the patient's health record.
- Even if the patient revokes C2A at a specific Participant, that Participant will still make that patient's PHI available for other Participants that do obtain C2A from the patient.
- With this model, each Participant will only have to send a positive consent indicator that signals a patient has provided the Participant with the consent to access his or her health information through the MHC network.
What should be expected?
- The implementation process is not a quick transition, MHC is mindful of the time it will take and is giving Participants until January 1, 2021 to be in full compliance with C2A.

InterSystems Global Summit
|
|
The InterSystems Global Summit Healthcare Leadership Conference was held in San Antonio, TX. MHC's President & CEO, Angie Bass, and CFO/COO, Jaki Porter, attended the events. This year, the conference focused on "unifying the health ecosystem". Bass and Porter's time there was spent having open discussions and learning from health care providers and payer organizations regarding how to enhance health care experiences and outcomes. The conference brought together panelists from different segments of health care to describe the benefits of a "unified" health record facilitating conversations of barriers and areas of opportunity.

SHIEC Leadership Award
Bass was also recognized, at the SHIEC Conference, for her outstanding leadership. Bass’ exemplary leadership abilities have propelled MHC to new heights and has expanded MHC to not only be the statewide HIE but a regional HIE serving the people of Missouri and its eight border states – which connects hospitals, providers, FQHCs, and other HIEs.

Angie Bass, President & CEO, and Jaki Porter, COO/CFO, attended the Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC) Annual Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. While at the conference, Bass served as a panelist in a breakout session: Bringing Together the Data That Matters – Supporting Communities Nationwide to Help Navigate Change. Bass was selected due to her work at MHC of bringing together disparate sources to aggregate information providing MHC Participants with one consolidated health record.

This past quarter has been busy and productive for MHC as we continue to make advancements in health information exchange (HIE). Our latest news is our “go live” with the VA. We will have more on this partnership in future issues but suffice to say we are extremely happy that we can better serve our veterans.
In August, I had the opportunity to attend the SHIEC conference and network with other great organizations. While there, I was honored to be awarded the SHIEC Achievement Award for Leadership. SHIEC continues to be a leader nationally for HIE’s in promoting interoperability for the benefit of patients. One of the initiatives we have discussed in previous newsletters is the Patient Centered Data Home initiative that promotes interoperability across the country. MHC is pleased to be one of four national gateways for the program. As of this publication, we have five HIEs connected, four pending connection, and eight who may join us in the near future. Many of the SHIEC members attended the InterSystems Global Summit, where our HIE Users Group continues to forge improvements in delivery, analytics and better capabilities for our members.
MHC was able to share valuable information and connect our Participants and vendors at the MHC 2018 Annual Connection. If you were not able to make it this year, we look forward to seeing you next year!
MHC is continually improving connectivity and services which is paramount as MHC focuses on optimizing the network and continuing to provide more value to our Participants. The value that HIEs offer was demonstrated when Hurricane Florence hit the east and south coast. I encourage you to read more about the positive impact HIE’s play in a disaster scenario by going to

Happy Holidays from all of us at MHC.
