Hello MHF Students and Supporters
Q-1 2024 was demanding, exciting and very rewarding. We’re proud of the opportunities and achievements that marked the new year. Our first two events of the year: the TRACON visit in January and the CU Aerospace Engineering tour in February had to be cancelled or rescheduled. We cancelled our TRACON tour because of a family emergency that required our tour’s host to be out of town, and poor weather on the day of the CU tour forced us to reschedule. In spite of the challenging start, our students were more than eager to return for our signature tour of Metropolitan State University in March, and the turnout was one of the largest ever.
We continue to offer opportunities beyond those directly provided by MHF. We encouraged qualified students to apply for the Wings Over The Rockies Air & Space Museum annual flight scholarship. This generous scholarship allows students to earn their Private Pilots’ License…valued at over $15,000. Six of our students took the challenge and applied and were offered interviews. We’ll keep you posted on their progress.
We’re always proud to report the achievements of our students. On March 8, former MHF “Phase 2” student, now Air Force officer Mahad Fahieh was promoted to Major and the MHF “Crew” was on hand to administer his oath of office. We were moved and truly humbled by Major Fahieh and his parent’s expressions of gratitude for the trails paved by the Tuskegee Airmen and the motivation provided by MHF.

Captain Mosley and the Mile High Flight "Crew"

Soaring Beyond Limits - MHF Events

Metropolitan State University - March 9, 2024
Our tour of Metropolitan State University’s Aviation department was a record-breaking success. Attendance was at an all-time high and the feed-back we’ve received from students and parents was universally positive. The tour was non-stop from 9:00 – 12:00 and included an extensive flight simulator experience and tour of Metro’s aviation facilities. Particularly rewarding was that several of our MHF graduates, (now MSU aviation students) were on hand to help conduct the tour, fly the simulators and answer questions about their experiences.
The main emphasis of this event was providing our students and parents with a detailed road-map for how to start their aviation/aerospace career journeys, at one of the top rated universities for civilian flight training in the nation.
MHF Crewmembers FO Kelly Akulschin and Captain John Frazier were our team leaders and were also able to coordinate some great media coverage through MSU’s Director of Media Relations, Mr. Tim Carroll. News crews from CBS and Fox31 were there to cover the event and interviewed several students and MHF grads. Andrea Martinez and Tommy Fortson spoke about the program and their journeys to become airline pilots. Please click this link below for the CBS news report.

Former Students Making Strides: Onward & Upward!
|
|
We continue to be encouraged by the feedback we receive from MHF graduates who’ve gone onto achieve great successes and pay it forward. Two of our former students, Christian Glassignon and Jamar Harrison recently checked in:

Christian Glassignon
“Hello, Mile High Flight Program. Thank you for what this program has done for me. This program has helped shape me into the man I am today. I’ve received incredible mentorship, giving me a grander idea of what I can achieve in the world and the tools and principles it takes to achieve those goals. Since I graduated from the program in 2019, I’ve taught myself how to code; I graduated from a programming apprenticeship, worked at a satellite imagery company, and moved to Silicon Valley. After working at a few tech startups, I’ve decided to start my own. I owe the program a great debt for my recent successes and will continue giving back to the program.

Christian G.

"I am here because of the courage of Tuskegee Airmen. From a historical lens, their heroism paved the way for Black aviators to gain respect and enabled pathways for many to pursue careers in the aviation industry. From a personal lens, one of my earliest mentors – the late Lt. Colonel John Mosley, an original Tuskegee Airman – encouraged me to find my space in the skies. In high school I completed flight training and did my first solo flight at the age of 17. Even in his Eighties, LTC Mosley made sure to show up at the airport to see me lift off as Pilot-in-Command. Though he is no longer with us, I have committed to honoring his life and legacy by creating space for others in aviation in the same way he did for me. The late Lt. Col. John Mosley made an everlasting impression on my life as a young boy.
Thank you, Delta Air Lines, for allowing me to honor him by speaking his name for the world to see. This is for you, Colonel. #NeverForgotten”

Community Giving: Paying it Forward
|
|
MHF mentors/Crewmembers Willy and Andrea Martinez extended the reach of our program to other underrepresented communities, when they gave a presentation about the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and aviation/aerospace opportunities, to some of Montbello High School’s Spanish speaking students.
