Hello students, parents and friends of the Mile High Flight program,
As we roll into Spring, we celebrate new beginnings and the belief that with the changing of seasons, ALL things are possible. In this addition of the Mile High Flight update, we focus on opportunity!
The April MHF update marks our last monthly addition. We will transition to quarterly updates in the future, and we look forward to continuing to showcase our student’s successes and exciting program developments.
Our March 4 event at the Aerospace Department of Metropolitan State University (MSU Denver) was highly successful. Over 90 people took part, including MHF graduates who are now MSU students, as well as faculty, staff, and members of the flight and aerobatic teams. Students and parents toured the facilities, flew simulators, and learned about the many pathways into pilot and other careers in aviation. Special thanks to Associate Chair Kevin Kuhlman and Kelly Marcotte Akulschin, an MHF coordinator who also teaches at MSU Denver!

Historical marker honoring Tuskegee Airmen unveiled in...
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A new historical marker honoring the Tuskegee Airmen was unveiled in Richmond, Kentucky. The historic aviators were the first group of African Americans to successfully complete their training and serve in the U.S. Army.

At Florida Memorial University, a small historically Black university in Miami Gardens, Tremaine Johnson is training to become one of the country's few Black pilots. Less than 2% of commercial airline pilots are Black.

MHF prides itself not only in providing new and challenging experiences for its students, but also presenting life-changing local and national opportunities. There are four exciting offerings we’d like to bring to your attention. The first is the Hubert "Hooks" Jones Chapter Scholarship, second is the flight scholarship offered by the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, (OBAP), the third is the OBAP ACE Camp in Denver, and the fourth is the immersive aviation experience offered by the Minnesota Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camp. Application deadlines are rapidly approaching, so please act quickly. |

OBAP Aviation Career Education (ACE) Camp (Denver: July 17 - 21)
The ACE Academy is designed to expose youths to the wide variety of career opportunities in aviation and aerospace. Their program offers students a hands-on experience of learning the aviation history, fundamentals of aerodynamics, the role of government in aviation and the many careers available in the aerospace field. Minnesota Aviation Career Education Camp

Alexander Buchanan
MHF student Alexander Buchanan shared some exciting news. He’s definitely well on his way to fulfilling his dreams.
“Hello MHF Crew! I just wanted to let you know that thanks to scholarships from Wings Over the Rockies and the Soaring Society of America, I recently earned my Private Pilot Certificate! Over the past 3 years, I learned to fly a glider through the Soaring Society of Boulder, at the Boulder Municipal Airport. My next goals are to get a first class medical certificate and a rating to fly powered planes before I finish high school. In the picture with me is Elliot Crawford DPE, who conducted my practical test.”

Mahad Fahieh
MHF graduate, (now Air Force Captain) Mahad Fahieh gave us a quick update:
“Thank you! I really appreciate everything the MHF “Crew” has done for me. I definitely wouldn't be here without you all. Still doing space ops and looking at Major here pretty soon! I'll let you know when that happens. Finishing out my two masters degrees and working for Northrop Grumman as an engineer when I'm not in uniform.”

Tommy Fortson, Andrea and Willy Martinez
We caught up with three Mile High Flight graduates and mentors at the United Airlines Flight Training Center in Denver. After a rigorous evaluation process, MHF graduates Tommy Fortson and Andrea Martinez were selected to become flight instructors on the Boeing 737 aircraft. Both will continue to “fly the line” as UAL pilots, while also instructing at the world’s largest flight training facility. On the right is MHF mentor Willy Martinez, (Andrea’s husband), who was recently hired to fly for United. Our future is in good hands!
