Testimonials
MIAPBC Members: We need your help!

We are looking for member testimonials to be featured on our website and other member recruitment materials. In 2-3 sentences, sum up why you decided to join the MIAPBC and how it has been beneficial for you.  Please email these to [email protected]

Something new we would like to incorporate for 2016 is the MIAPBC Ambassador Program. Veteran members (5+ years) would make themselves available to talk to new members in a mentor-like role. Sometimes it is better for new members to talk to other members who have been in their shoes rather than association staff.  Ambassador's would also make new members feel welcome at MIAPBC events. If you are interested, contact Alyssa Freeman.

Fishing Pros featured at West Palm Beeach Fishing Club
Seminars, Workshops are Designed to Help
 Educate Anglers & Improve Skills

The West Palm Beach Fishing Club (WPBFC) has announced its guest speaker and meeting topic calendar for 2016 (see attached schedule).  The regularly scheduled meetings feature Florida fishing pros who will reveal valuable tips and advice on how and where to catch the area's most sought after game fish.  "This may very well be our best line-up yet. We have some outstanding anglers, captains and even a few outdoor media celebrities coming to the club this year.  They are among the best in the business and are very generous with their fishing know how.   No matter what your experience level is, there is always something new to learn when it comes to fishing, especially from the all-star cast we have coming to the club this year," said WPBFC Chairman Pete Schulz.  The meetings are held the first and fourth Wednesday of most months at the WPBFC's historic clubhouse, located at 201 Fifth Street (corner of 5th Street & North Flagler Drive), in downtown West Palm Beach.  Inshore and offshore topics are featured.  Local, regional and nationally recognized fishing experts cover the techniques, locations, baits and tackle that work for them.  "This year we will be conducting several hands on workshops related to the featured meeting topic which are always quite popular.  The meetings also provide a great opportunity to talk with the pros and network with other active anglers.  The Fishing Club continues to fulfill a very unique role in the community," continued Schulz.

Annual membership in the WPBFC costs $80 for adults, $25 for juniors (age 10 - 18) and $15 for pee wee's (kids up to 9 years old).  Family memberships are available for $150.  There is a $15.00 processing fee for new members.  A WPBFC Lifetime membership costs $1,500.  For more info on WPBFC programs and events phone (561) 832-6780 or on the web at http://www.westpalmbeachfishingclub.org/

World-class Rybovich, marine industry a foundation for business growth
Antonio Fins
Palm Beach Post

Last month, I visited  Rybovich's West Palm Beach marina complex. By my calculations, there were more than a few billion dollars worth of ultra-luxury, megayachts docked at the facility - either on a port of call or having maintenance work done.

"We're competing with locations in Europe," said Carlos Vidueira, Rybovich's vice president. "Every year we've increased the number of superyachts that come to our facility."

Marine businesses like Rybovich - which has operated in Palm Beach County since 1919 -  generate $2 billion for the Palm Beach County economy, according to a 2014 analysis on the  Marine Industry Association of Palm Beach Countywebsite. The Rybovich marina and facility, in which the company has invested tens of millions of dollars, employs approximately 300 people.

Luring that next-new business or industry sometimes is a Quixotic quest in the Sunshine State. We focus so much on building a Silicon Valley in the sunshine that we overlook the incredible businesses we have.

One of those is the marine industry, a sector in which South Florida is already world-class. Look no further than Rybovich.

The Rybovich facility got a makeover after it was purchased in 2004 by H. Wayne Huizenga, Jr., including a restaurant and lounge for yacht crews. Earlier this month, Rybovich won approval for a permit to build out-of-water in Riviera Beach, plus another permit to add dock space at the West Palm Beach headquarters.

Rybovich has also been involved in conservation efforts at the Lake Worth Lagoon, which Vidueira says is a unique, natural resource that makes the marina more appealing for crews.

Vidueira says Rybovich's overall goal is to grow the superyacht business, not to duplicate existing marine industry operations.

"That's really why we came to West Palm Beach," Vidueira said, adding Broward and Miami-Dade didn't have space to accommodate more superyachts. "We haven't cannibalized the business that goes to Fort Lauderdale." Read More.

Computer Solutions
This is a real one. A number of people using Dell PCs have been contacted by scammers claiming to be Dell Tech Support who actually had specific data that only Dell could have had. We're talking the customer service tag number, a support number printed on a sticker on every Dell computer. I have used Dell machines for 20 years and am very familiar with that sticker.

This is a variant on the Microsoft tech support scam where they call PC users and claim they have detected a problem with the person's computer and need to fix it. End-users gullible enough to give access to their workstations (usually via remote software), are billed hundreds of dollars on their credit card but the scammers of course don't fix anything - and in some cases their PCs are infected with ransomware until they pay up.

Last week, there was a story in Ars Technica where a man said he called Dell about a problem with his optical drive, and soon after he got a call from a scammer who knew about his specific problem and had his service tag number and other customer information.

In October the company posted a warning about this type of telephone scam on its website, but it doesn't mention a service tag number hack. Dell does not seem to know what exactly is going on and is investigating. To me it seems that one or more of their servers have been compromised and support data has been exfiltrated and used by scammers. Dell needs to fix the leak.

In the meantime I suggest you send this to your employees, friends and family:

"There is a new tech support scam doing the rounds. This time it is cyber criminals with foreign accents calling you, claiming they are from Dell and they even have the correct service tag of your Dell PC. They will try to manipulate you into giving them access to your computer so that they can "fix the problem" and charge your credit card or worse, infect your computer with ransomware.

"If you get called by unknown people claiming to be tech support (any company) and need to get access to your computer, hang up the phone immediately and delete any email they might send you with similar claims.

"ONLY give out personal information if you have initiated the call and properly looked up the main company number yourself on the company's main website you want to reach. Do not rely on a popup, ads, or general web search on another website or forum unless you can verify it is a valid source and verify it is a valid phone number for that company."
