New Legal Advisory #1-2023: The Compact and Sovereign Tribal Nations

The children of active-duty members of the uniformed services, National Guard and Reserve on active-duty orders, uniformed members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and United States Public Health Services (USPHS) are eligible for assistance under the compact.

Due to their parent's assignment, some USPHS school aged dependents may reside on and/or attend tribal reservation schools. Does the Compact apply in these cases?

What is a Legal Advisory?

While most compact cases forwarded to the National Office require informal consultation or clarification, periodically the Commission issues advisory opinions, which merely advises on the constitutionality or interpretation of a law.

The advisory is utilized for a formal state statute or compact rules review. Since January 2011, the Commission has issued twenty-one opinions.

Spanish Collaterals Available on MIC3.net

The Communications and Outreach Committee is excited to announce the release of newly translated Spanish collaterals. MCEC 25th Anniversary Recognition

The Commission presented a special award to Dr. Becky Porter at the Military Child Education Coalition’s annual General Training Session in Washington D.C. in recognition of their 25^th anniversary. MIC3’s Lindsey Dablow facilitated Compact 101 and Compact 201 training sessions; and a special brief for the MCEC Board of Directors. An Ex-officio member of the Commission, MCEC’s initiatives and collaborative efforts to strengthen support for military families and students is vital to the supporting our mission of successful education transitions for military children.

Coast Guard Celebrates 233rd Birthday

The US Coast Guard celebrates its 233rd birthday on August 4, 2023. “The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government. Established in 1790, the Coast Guard served as the nation’s only armed force on the sea until Congress launched the Navy Department eight years later. Since then, the Coast Guard has protected the United States throughout its long history and served proudly in every one of the nation’s conflicts.”
