Kyle Fairbairn has served as the Executive Director of the Military Impacted Schools Association (MISA) since 2012, advocating for military-connected students for most of his career. Mr Fairbairn has been instrumental in strengthening the partnership with MIC3 which has become one of the most rewarding experiences of his job.
MISA has seen MIC3 grow and mature, from a compact adopted into legislation by 11 states to now being adopted by all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each state brings their individual needs to the table, and what makes it more personal is that each member always has the military child’s needs at the forefront.
Since 2017, MISA has partnered with MIC3 to develop a training program focused on the Compact. The training sessions are held in MISA districts and the response from school administrators has been wonderful. The partnership between MIC3 and MISA allows many schools the opportunity to learn about the Compact while doing so in their own backyards, they also learn from neighboring districts dealing with the same issues regarding the military-connected child.
MISA has already conducted training in five states and will be in Georgia in May to instruct schools around Fort Stewart and Kings Bay Naval Station. A seventh training is being planned for August and will focus on military impacted school districts in the Seattle, Washington area.
MISA’s role as an ex-officio board member to the Commission is extremely important and valuable to the overall mission of MISA and we, at MISA, look forward to continuing the collaborative relationship we have with MIC3 well into the future.
