FROM THE CHAIR
In April, the Commission – along with many other organizations, non-profits, and public entities – will celebrate the important role of military children while their service member parents are serving the nation. Across the nation, states, communities, and schools celebrate this month in various ways - including wearing the color purple.

CASE HIGHLIGHT
A family PCS'd from Miami, Florida to Omaha, Nebraska in late October early November. The student was in 10th grade honors English and was asked to do assignments from lessons given prior to them arriving at their new school. The parent was told that because it was an honors class, it must be made up and there was no way around it. The parent met with the teacher and the vice principal. This meeting was unsuccessful and the student began falling behind in all their classes trying to make up an assignment. The student has been taking honors classes since starting high school.
Contact was made with Brian Halstead, Nebraska Commissioner who contacted the school principal and the school liaison officer (SLO). Following a meeting between the Principal and the SLO, the school adjusted the curricular requirements for the student.
The following articles were used as reference to resolve the matter:
SEC. 5.101 Course placement SEC. 5.102 Educational program placement SEC. 5.104 Placement flexibility

Should you wish to recognize an individual for any noteworthy contribution in support of the Commission and its Mission we have outlined a process by which this can be submitted. All cases are required to be processed via the State Commissioner or their official representative. In the event a state is without one, nominations may be forwarded to the national office for consideration.
