It's PCS (Permanent Change of Station) season, and families are transitioning to new locales and kids are headed back to school! Service school liaison officers (SLO) play an integral role in supporting military families and students. Most bases and installations have a SLO, although some serve multiple locations.
Parents are encouraged to contact your SLO regarding schools, education options, or transition questions. Also, Compact Commissioners should connect and work closely with SLOs in your state - SLO are helpful in resolving cases, and are most likely working with the family or school district on the concern/issue. SLOs are "plugged in" and may be able to verify information and provide additional resources or support for families.
Japan's Camp Zama SLO, Brooke Boswell, helps families with education needs. "Contacting (me) is a great way to help parents alleviate concerns, get questions answered and allow their children to be prepared to enter their new school smoothly and easily," Boswell says.

THANK YOU DR. KELLER AND MS. RAEZER
|
|
At the recent Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) National Training Seminar held in Washington DC, MIC3 Chair John "Don" Kaminar honored Dr. Mary Keller, MCEC President and CEO, and Ms. Joyce Raezer, Executive Director of the National Military and Family Association (NMFA) with special awards in recognition of their contributions to the Commission.
Both MCEC and NMFA are ex-officio, non-voting members of the Commission.
From 2006-2009, both were members of the initial Compact Advisory Team, led by the Council of State Governments, they worked with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), policy experts, and stakeholders from 16 other organizations to develop the legislative statute eventually adopted by the 50 states and District of Columbia.
The legislation is the foundation of the Commission and basis of the Compact Rules.
Both Keller and Raezer will retire this year after 20 and 24 years respectively with their organizations, and their contributions to the Commission will always be remembered!
