  February 2016

The Sounders season opener versus Sporting Kansas City is right around the corner at 4pm Sunday, March 6th, and it's a home game that the club has designated "Welcome Jordan Morris" in honor of Mercer Island's own "home grown" Sounder.

Jordan got his start with Mercer Island FC before moving to our premier sister club, Eastside FC. He completed his youth development days with the Sounders Academy. Jordan has spent the past 3 years playing  college soccer at Stanford University. During his high school career with MIHS boys' soccer he led the team to multiple state playoff berths and was named Washington State Player of the year after his junior year. MIFC, EFC and MIHS boys soccer are all promoting opening night celebration of Jordan's start to his Sounders' career.

We'd love to get a great turnout to see Jordan make his MLS debut. Click on the link below to order tickets and use the promo code to get the special discounted MIFC pricing.

MIFC and EYSA Spring Academy and Get Ready for SpringAcademySelect Clinics Open for Registration

Mercer Island FC and the other member clubs of the Eastside Youth Soccer Association (EYSA) are once again offering the popular Spring Soccer Academy and Get Ready for Select training clinics. The clinics are designed for players of all levels from 6-14 and are conducted by some of the top soccer Professionals in the area.

Players will be grouped by age and skill. Younger players will focus on ball mastery and dribbling. The older players will work on more advanced skills and concepts. The clinics are excellent for the Select and Premier player preparing for tryouts and the Recreational player looking to improve their skills for the upcoming fall season.

Sessions are offered multiple days and times on Mercer Island and on the Eastside to fit your player's schedule.
Mercer Island times are  Tuesdays 6:00 - 7:30 pm, Wednesdays 3:00 - 4:30 pm, and Thursdays 6:00 - 7:30 pm at Islander Middle School.

The academy starts the week of March 14th for 7 weeks (no training the week of Spring break). Cost is $175 per player.  Don't delay, this popular program fills up quickly.  To register for the Spring Academy training clinic,  click here

Last month we ran an article about the US Soccer Federation (USSF) mandated changes on team formation (moving from school year to calendar year based team formation) and rule changes for small sided soccer for the younger age groups. We included links to information on the MIFC, EYSA, USSF websites, b
ut we know there still may be questions. So we've scheduled 3 information sessions for parents on these changes as well as the soccer landscape in Washington State.

All three sessions will cover the same information, but give you some options to attend based on your schedule -
  • February 28th - USSF changes and the soccer landscape, 4-5:00pm, MI Library
  • March 10th - USSF changes and the soccer landscape, 7-8:00pm, MI Community Center
  • March 26th - USSF changes and the soccer landscape, 10-11am, MI Community Center
In addition, we have our annual Select information session for parents whose player is interested in trying out for our Select soccer program -
  • March 3rd - Select Soccer information night, 7-8:30pm, MI Community Center
If you have questions or just want to learn more about soccer in Washington state, this is your opportunity. If you missed the information on the USSF mandated changes, click here to see the information in last month's newsletter

Toby's TakeTobysTake

There are a lot of parts that go into running a successful soccer club for nearly 1200 Mercer Island kids. One of the most important is the player development curriculum we utilize to begin developing the skills of our youngest players, starting at age 5, right through our experienced high school aged players.

Thanks to the expert leadership of MIFC's VP of Player and Coach development, Aaron Byers, we have a robust curriculum that has been adopted by the clubs across the Eastside Youth Soccer Association. You see it in our training clinics during the fall season, in the popular Friday night Technical Director's Winter Sharpness sessions in the winter, and in the upcoming Spring Academy and Get Ready for Select training clinics starting in March (see article above).

In addition to Aaron, Mercer Island FC has literally world-class coaches and trainers working with our programs and teams. One of them, MIFC's Technical Director Darren Sawatzky, was recently featured in an article on SI.com. Last year Darren completed the Elite Formation Coaching License course administered by the French Soccer Federation, one of the highest international certifications a soccer professional can achieve. Read more about Darren and the impact this program is having on US soccer at Sports Illustrated's on-line site at www.si.com.

We are fortunate to have Aaron, Darren and the other incredibly talented professional coaches and trainers working with our kids. I hope you'll take the opportunity to thank them for their work when you get the chance.

See you on the pitch.
