MIFC Night at SeattleSeattleReign Reign FC was a Great Success
Players and Parents had
fun despite the rain

On Saturday night, May 19th, MIFC held what will likely become an annual event on the club calendar. Over 200 MIFC players and parents watched the Reign battle the Chicago Red Stars to a scoreless draw on MIFC at the Reign night. In addition to the large turnout of by MIFC faithful, our girls got to participate in the pre-game march out on the field with the teams and functioned as ball girls around the field during the game.

Despite the outcome, the players and families had a great time watching the pros utilize the same core skills that we teach them every week in practice. And the chance to interact with some of the Reign players created life long memories. A special t hank you to Seattle  Reign FC and Reign Forward Beverly Yanez  for hosting Mercer Island FC Night. The players had a blast with the Walk Out, Halftime, Ball Girls, Autographs and Pictures! Here are some of our G08's with Megan Rapinoe .

An example of the feedback we got after the game - " Thank you so much for taking Leela last night and organizing such a fun evening. She came home so excited about the whole night. She LOVED being a ball girl and the proximity to the players and game. She said she learned a ton by being so close and was so impressed with the level of playing. She talked about all the famous players and just came home elated about the whole evening so thank you!!!!"

On Sunday, May 13th, the MIFC Maroon G01, coached by Tom Hill and assisted by Steve Gest, faced off against a tough Washington Premier FC team in the finals of the Washington Youth Soccer Presidents Cup. WPFC had won 5 straight games in the tournament with a combined goal total of 28 for and only 1 against.

After a tight battle, the first half ended tied 1-1. Just before the second half started one of Maroon's team leaders spoke up: "The team that comes out strong in the first 15 minutes and wants it more will win this game.   Let's go out there and beat this team!" The team responded and scored in the first two minutes on their way to a 4-2 win.

Coach Hill, who had missed the semi-final match to attend his daughter's college graduation in Texas and caught an early morning flight from Texas to be there for the final, summed up the team's effort: "It was a solid 4-2 win against a quality team to take the well-deserved top honors. Maroon continues to be a cohesive team. Ten of Maroon's 18 players have been on the team since U12 and thirteen were on the team at U14. They have grown as both individual players and as a team. They know their teammate's tendencies and rely on each other. I'm so proud of how these girls have developed over the years, both as individual players and as a team."

Coach Hill gets a hair make over after challenging the girls that if they won the Presidents Cup, he would let them dye his hair maroon.

MIFC Welcomes Former Manchester CityEmmaKete Player Emma Kete to Select Coaching Ranks
Kete played for New Zealand in 2008 Olympics and 2015 FIFA World Cup

MIFC has signed former professional and New Zealand international player Emma Kete to our Select coaching lineup. Emma's soccer resume includes stops at several professional clubs around the world, including Manchester City in the English Women's Super League, as well as representing New Zealand in top international competitions. She has a master's in Sports Psychology.  Emma will be working with our GU06 team as well as participating in a variety of clinics and club programs throughout the year.

MIFC VP of Coach and Player Development Aaron Byers commented, "we are thrilled to be adding Emma. She is a fantastic, energetic, top level coach. We already have a strong lineup of coaches like OT Yanez, Elliot Fauske, Colin Rigby, Willy Cardenas, Cristian Pintone, Darren Sawatzky, Francios Delafosse, Tom Hill, and Andrei Zahajko, but one of our priorities has been to work on adding women coaches to our program. Not only do these coaches work with our Select teams, but many participate in Micro and Recreational Clinics and other MIFC programs throughout the year".

Sign up now for Micro andMicroRecRegister Recreational soccer!
Don't delay, register today

Registration is currently open for our Micro (U6-U7) and Recreational (U8-U18) Fall soccer seasons.  While September seems a long way off for the start of Fall Recreational and Micro Soccer, it's right around the corner from a planning and club administration standpoint.

"So what's the rush" you ask? Well, there are a number reasons we encourage you to register your player as soon as possible -
  • With ~1200 kids in MIFC programs, we need time to get players assigned to teams across U6-U19 age groups. We start with returning players being assigned to their previous team, then fill out rosters with new players.
  • For returning players, you need to register before the deadline to ensure your spot on your former team.
  • We target to have rosters completed and ready to distribute to coaches in July.
  • The leagues our MIFC teams compete in start working on their schedules early in the summer. So they want the member clubs like MIFC to have an idea of how many teams we'll be fielding that they have to plan for.
  • A lot of work goes into planning the practice time slots and game schedules for the 100+ MIFC teams for the summer and fall.
  • Finally, we know Mercer Island families are busy and are already beginning to plan their summer and fall activities.
