We found evidence of a dramatic shift since the early days of the role – CDOs are increasingly coming from business background and focused on offense-oriented rather than defensive initiatives. The most effective CDOs are focused on creating demonstrable value for their organizations, which typically involves a focus on important use cases, the management of data products, and building analytics and AI infrastructures to help scale data projects.
