Join us April 18 from 4-8pm at WBUR CitySpace with MIT Edgerton Center and many others at the free Science Friday Climate Fair! We’ll be there with SeaPerch II, a remotely-operated vehicle that can measure depth and temperature in our local waters. Kids of all ages, families, and caregivers are welcome.

2023 RoboBoat | MIT Arcturus Team Excels with Autonomous Boat
|
|
The MIT Arcturus Team traveled to Sarasota, FL March 22-28 with MIT Sea Grant Education Administrator Andrew Bennett for the 16th Annual RoboBoat Competition. RoboBoat is an international competition in which teams build and program autonomous boats to navigate challenges. This year, 23 teams competed from Canada, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, Poland, Puerto Rico, Turkey, and the US. The MIT team won the Technology Award and 1st Place for Documentation, Video, and Website!

2023 Doherty Professor | Welcoming Assistant Prof. Kaitlyn Becker
|
|
MIT Sea Grant welcomes MIT alumna and Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Kaitlyn Becker as a 2023 Doherty Professor in Ocean Utilization for her research, "Soft robotic design and fabrication for marine biology".
The Doherty Professorship provides a two-year stipend, research support, and development opportunities for non-tenured MIT faculty members pursuing innovative ideas in ocean technologies.

Congratulations to Arianna Ilvonen (MechE '24) on winning Best UROP Poster Award at the annual MIT Mechanical Engineering Research Exhibition! Arianna developed and deployed an autonomous, cable-mounted coastal monitoring robot that can collect data even in turbulent environments. >>Read More

MIT News + Soft Robotics | Scalable Aquatic Robots
|
|
MIT engineers, including MIT Sea Grant Director Michael Triantafyllou, Dixia Fan, and PhD candidate Jose del Aguila Ferrandis, have developed an innovative approach to building scalable underwater robots using simple repeating substructures that are able to assemble into swimming forms, from eel-like to wing-shaped.
The work was published in the journal Soft Robotics in a paper by MIT research assistant Alfonso Parra Rubio, professors Michael Triantafyllou and Neil Gershenfeld, and six others.

SeaPerch II | Introducing New SeaPerch II Modules and Sensors
|
|
SeaPerch is an underwater robotics program that started at MIT Sea Grant in 2003 and continues today through RoboNation. The SeaPerch program trains teachers and students to build and navigate their own remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs.

Join Harvard Museums of Science & Culture, Harvard Natural History Museum, and MIT Sea Grant Visiting Artist Keith Ellenbogen for a Nature Photography & Environmental Storytelling Workshop presented in collaboration with the Town of Plymouth’s Department of Marine and Environmental Affairs. The three-session workshop includes a trip to the Eel River Preserve in Plymouth, MA.

Congressional Visits | MIT Sea Grant and Woods Hole Sea Grant

|
MIT Sea Grant joined Woods Hole Sea Grant in Washington, D.C. this March to meet with members of the U.S. Congress. Sea Grant was established by Congress in 1966 and MIT Sea Grant received its first funding in 1968. We appreciate the ongoing support!

Climate Discussions | Meeting with Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe + NOAA Administrator
|
|
MIT Sea Grant joined the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, NOAA Administrator Dr. Rick Spinrad, and Upper Cape high school students for a meeting in Mashpee, MA on March 15. MIT Sea Grant Assistant Director for Advisory Services Rob Vincent and Marine Extension Specialist Danny Badger toured the Tribe's Government Center and aquaculture operations and joined the discussion on climate and policy.

On Campus| MIT Climate Clock + Earth Month at MIT
|
|
Explore environment, sustainability, and climate change-themed Earth Month at MIT events through April compiled by MIT Environmental Solutions Initiatives, and keep an eye out for the new MIT Climate Clock on the Green Building (Bldg. 54) at the end of April! The MIT Climate Clock started in 2021 as a student project in the class, D-Lab: Water, Climate Change, and Health, taught by MIT Sea Grant Coastal Ecologist Julie Simpson and Susan Murcott.
