Leo shares his thoughts

Dear MJC families,

This newsletter is a fantastic opportunity to hear about what is going on in the Hebrew School. As you all know, we are introducing a number of innovations that are meant to provide a better experience for the students and the parents. One of those innovations is a new unit in the curriculum focusing on the tolerance, acceptance, and the Holocaust. We want to build on the excellent work that Stacy Galin has been doing with our teens, training them to stand up to Antisemitism. This topic is especially relevant today, as we see more troubling cases of Jews being targeted just for who they are. This is a good opportunity to hear more stories from our parents and the community at large. Stay tuned for invitations to join us to share in class.

P.S - Don't forget to join us for our exciting events in November and December!

Kitah Gan Yeladim

October has gone and past,

It really has gone way too fast.

Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot we celebrated as one.

Next, we have Simchat Torah and we will raise our Israeli flags high and have some more fun.

In November we will continue to work on filling Shabbat bags and learning the Alef-Bet song.

It is very sweet how nicely the children all get along.

We always sing our prayers for meals and juice, and Bim-Bam is as loud as we can be.

Making sure all the other classes hear us learning our Jewish heritage proudly.

We will keep learning the Shema and why we sing this song with pride.

When we lie down and rise up, letting God be our guide.

We had a busy month filled with many Jewish holidays! We welcomed the Jewish New Year of 5785 with lots of sweetness and love. We discussed Yom Kippur as a time for reflection and saying, “I’m Sorry.” We learned Sukkot is the harvest holiday and we enjoyed going in our very own MJC sukkah. For Simchat Torah we celebrated our love for the Torah by singing and dancing around our room. Next up…Alef Bet and learning about welcoming Shabbat!

Kitah Bet

Kitah Bet is doing a great job bringing in their mitzvot each week. We loved all of their sukkahs that the class brought in for the Sukkah Challenge. Each student that had brought in a sukkah received a certificate of participation. All of the beautiful sukkahs are displayed in the Chai Building vestibule. The class enjoyed learning about the Holidays and learned the letters BET, TAV, SHIN, MEM, LAMED, KAF and HAY. We also learned about CREATION.

Looking forward to seeing what next month brings!

Kitah Gimmel Judaica

The third-grade students learned about the holidays Sukkot and Simchat Torah in October. They built their sukkot out of paper towel rolls and read all about the holiday. They all had a chance to shake the lulav and talked about celebrating the harvest. We created an edible torah for Simchat Torah and read all about the holiday in our holiday booklet. We are continuing to learn all ten commandments. It has been a busy October!

Kitah Gimmel Hebrew

Kitah Gimmel is actively working on learning the Hebrew letters and vowels. Our small group setting is

making the individual students' experience more meaningful and engaging. Each student has an opportunity to read multiple times and to practice writing in Hebrew. So far, the students have learned to read the Hebrew words for Shabbat, helper, bride, blessing and daughter. Homework was sent home, and your students were asked to practice reading with you. Please engage with them and listen to them practice. They are all really doing a great job! This month they also were presented with their siddurim at a Friday night service. The students loved the covers presented by parents and are already taking such pride in learning the blessings and prayers from their own siddurs.

Kitah Dalet Judaica

In 4th grade Judaica this month, we have reflected, celebrated, and created in honor of the remaining high holidays. We wrote letters for Yom Kippur to reflect on our past year and how we can be better this year. We created paper flags for Simchat Torah. In addition to our holiday activities, we discussed the importance of Shabbat. We discussed despite our busy lives it is important to take a day or moment to rest and reflect. Coinciding with their Friday night service, the students created panels to describe what Shabbat looks like and means to them. Their work was featured at their Friday night service.

Dear Families,

Thank you for your continued support and engagement in our classroom activities!

This month, we have been diving into our study of Yom Kippur. The students learned several Hebrew words related to this important holiday, focusing on both pronunciation and their meanings in English. We had a wonderful time during our gallery walk, where students explored the different words displayed around the classroom. They also participated in the "I have, who has" game, which showcased their growing knowledge of the vocabulary.

In our next session, we shifted our focus to Hebrew vowels. We discussed helpful hints to remember the various vowel sounds and engaged in fun games to enhance our fluency. It has been a joy to see the students so enthusiastic about learning!

Thank you for being an integral part of our learning journey.

Best regards,

Mrs. Oran

Dear 5th Grade families,

We had a fun and busy month in Hebrew school this October. We enjoyed our mini field trip to the synagogue for a series of activities in honor of Sukkot. The students played music, created delicious treats and met with Rabbi Pont to learn the history and symbolism of the holiday. We also delved into the world of the bible to discover the story of creation and the story of Adam and Eve. The children answered questions involving some of the deeper meanings of these stories. What are the dangers of temptation and defiance? What are the positive aspects of punishment? There were many thought-provoking discussions that helped to elevate their learning level from knowing the story to pulling out a deeper life lesson from the story. We were very proud of the Saturday morning service and the excitement of all the families and children. Thank you for your attendance and all your support at home.

Sincerely,

Geniene Podos and Stacy Dutka

Dear Parents,

It’s been a choppy month with meaningful class time at Hebrew School.

In the classroom we’ve been talking about time and numbers in Hebrew. Out of the classroom we enjoyed an interactive Sukkot experience learning about what makes a kosher sukkah, the brachot said on the Lulav & Etrog and practicing being ‘Modim Be’simcha’ through music.

Kitah Zayin

Last month, the 7th graders learned about the Torah! Ask your student how many Torah portions there are total, the names of each of the Five Books of Moses, or which characters appeared in which book(s) – see if they recall what we discussed! They also did research on their portions, writing 3-4 facts on an index card. They read their cards on Simchat Torah evening, October 24; I was so proud of each student that presented what they learned to everyone at the service.

Rabbi Pont

In October, I had the opportunity to work with the 7th graders on trope this month. These are the markings we use when chanting from the Torah. We will continue to work on these throughout the year.
