Opening Service 2024

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” - 1 Peter 5:6

On August 26, the MLC campus family gathered to praise God for the start of a new school year and to hear an important message from Pastor Mike Weigand MLC ’96: “HumilityIt's What Makes You Great!”

Even as we eagerly look forward to a year filled with God’s blessings, Pastor Weigand’s sermon on 1 Peter 5:1-7 reminded the entire campus family that every one of those blessings comes from the Lord, not from ourselves. We pray that God will keep us humble in heart as we serve and learn this school year.

We also pray for God’s blessing on the service of five new faculty members (pictured) installed during the Opening Service:

  • Janet Justice, Admissions Counselor
  • MacKenzie Holzbauer, Admissions Counselor
  • Jon Hermanson, Professor of Music
  • Susan Decker, Professor of English
  • JoElyn Krohn, Professor of Mathematics

New Beginnings, Enduring Faith

Heat and rain didn’t stop our new students and resident assistants from having fun during orientation weekend.

The RAs not only made move-in a breeze, but they also planned plenty of activities—like lawn games and Ballroom Blast—to help new students adjust and get to know each other a little better.

Amidst all the excitement and nervous anticipation of orientation weekend, new students were reminded that their identity as children of God remains the same. The students and their parents attended a special worship service led by Professor Jacob Behnken (dean of chapel) on the Saturday of orientation weekend, reassuring them of God’s loving presence as they train for gospel ministry.

Back-to-School: Student Teachers

It’s back-to-school time for students across the country, and we love to see the pictures, especially this one! MLC students are going back to early childhood, elementary, and high school classrooms this fall—this time, as teachers.

In the first week of September, over 50 student teachers began their experiences in Lutheran and public schools. While these students have had several teaching opportunities during their time at MLC, student-teaching provides them with intensive practice in lesson planning, relationship building, and so many other useful skills.

Please join us in keeping these young educators in your prayers.

Senior Grace Kieselhorst (St. John-Watertown WI, pictured) was the standout, earning All-Tournament honors for the second straight year. MLC Wind Symphony: Potpourri

pot • pour • ri | ˌpōpəˈrē | “a mixture of things” — Take one part fanfare, add two parts song, a dash of pasodoble, and just a hint of medievalism, and the result is a delightful mixture of melodies!

Please join the Martin Luther College Wind Symphony on Homecoming weekend for Potpourri! As the title suggests, the concert program is a collection of diverse musical traditions, with each piece presenting a distinct musical flavor.

The concert will be held on Sunday, October 6, at a special time, 1:00 pm, in the MLC Auditorium. Can’t make it in person? Watch the livestream on MLCs YouTube channel.
