On Wednesday, May 1, we will celebrate our annual MLC Day. This day is fun for everyone—for all the families, friends, schools, and congregations who support us. Each year, hundreds of our MLC friends pray for our ministry, share messages, photos, and videos on social media, and generously give to our Congregational Partner Grant Program (CPGP).
But MLC day is far more than a fun event. We hope the day raises awareness of our ministry across the WELS, provides an opportunity for everyone to promote ministerial education at MLC, and increases the financial assistance we can provide through CPGP.
The enthusiastic participation of our wider MLC family in MLC Day enhances the visibility of MLC’s mission and provides a strong message of encouragement to all connected with the college’s work.
-
Pray for students, including second-career adults, who are considering enrollment at MLC, and offer prayers of encouragement for students currently preparing for the public ministry.
-
Share encouraging experiences related to the public ministry and messages of encouragement to our students here on campus.
-
Give to our Congregational Partner Grant Program (CPGP) Matching Fund, which provides financial support for hundreds of students studying for the public ministry at MLC.
Watch for emails, text messages, and social media updates to find out more about how you can provide encouragement for our ministry at MLC.

First Team All-American Honor
|
|
Samuel Plocher (Holy Trinity-Des Moines WA) was named First Team All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for his efforts during the indoor season. Sam was also named USTFCCCA All-Region, UMAC Rookie of the Year, and UMAC All-Conference.
This was Sam’s first indoor track and field season, and he loved it. “I liked not having to factor weather into the equation,” he says. “Also, the mood of indoor track meets was always fun. The facilities kept us in close quarters, and that created more opportunities to make friends from other teams.”
Since his success in the indoor season, Sam is looking forward to how he can continue to improve in the outdoor track season. And he knows that his improvement will go beyond athleticism. “In any sport at MLC,” he says, “you learn how to work with your peers, grow in leadership, take defeat gracefully, and respect your coaches. All of those skills translate to ministry.”

During spring break, Professor Aaron Robinson, MLC's cultural diversity coordinator, led eight students on a civil rights tour, visiting St. Louis, Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Atlanta. In each city, the group toured museums and historical sites commemorating the civil rights movement and Black history.
After going on a similar trip when he was younger, first-year Phillip McCaskill (St. Marcus-Milwaukee, pictured in blue T-shirt) was eager to participate in MLC’s civil rights tour. His favorite part of the tour? The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. “That museum does an amazing job of documenting the many different people and organizations involved in the civil rights movement,” he said. “People of all races, ethnicities, and backgrounds came together to fight for civil rights.”
During the tour, Phil noticed the important role churches played in the civil rights movement as places to gather and find unity. “This experience showed me I must be ready to minister to all people,” he said. “The trip encouraged me to share Black culture with others at MLC so they will be able to do the same.”

Daylight: Real-World Learning
|
|
How does spring break in Arizona sound? How about if we throw in some good food, good friends, and lots of people who love Jesus? MLC students get all of that and more when they sign up for a Daylight trip!
Daylight takes MLC students to mission congregations around the country—and sometimes the world—where they can serve by teaching VBS, canvassing, coaching sports Bible camps, assisting at worship, lending humanitarian aid, and more. Daylight provides the real-world learning that brings classroom learning to life.
Katie Butler (Star of Bethlehem-New Berlin WI), Morgan Behnke (Trinity-Brillion WI), and Caitlin Broehm (Mt. Olive-Appleton WI) had a great Daylight experience at River of Life Lutheran Church in Goodyear, Arizona, just a few weeks ago.

“Something Old, Something New . . .”
|
|
The repertoire of the wind band has an eclectic history. Being the youngest of all the large performing ensembles, much of the wind band’s early repertoire was transcribed from existing music libraries—typically the orchestra. Many of the core original works of the wind band date back one hundred years or more. Contemporary compositions, on the other hand, are influenced by any number of genres, not the least of which is jazz.
Please join the Martin Luther College Wind Symphony for “Something Old, Something New . . .” on Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 pm in the MLC Auditorium. Music on the program takes inspiration from this familiar saying, reflecting the varied influences that have shaped the development of the wind band.
Can’t make it in person? The concert will be livestreamed on MLC’s YouTube Channel.
