Fine Arts Prepare for Ministry Too
From February 23 to 25, MLC Forum brought to life Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. With intricate sets and costumes, the production captured the period piece’s tone, but the cast’s energetic delivery really made the show.
Zoe Scharf (St. Paul-New Ulm MN) portrayed the prickly Lady Bracknell. For Zoe, working with the rest of the cast members, the directors, and the crew was the best part of the experience. “Everyone put so much heart and time into this production,” she said. “Their love for Christ and one another really shone through all of their work.”

MLC’s fine arts programs emphasize how students can use their gifts to God’s glory, both now and in their future ministries. Zoe already sees the benefits of that preparation. “I want to be a leader for the fine arts in my future,” she said. “Through this experience, I was able to observe two very talented directors, a producer, and several crew heads who display the leadership skills that I hope to carry into my future ministry.”

The production was part of MLC's new Focus on Fine Arts weekend, which gave high school students the opportunity to see how they might develop their artistic gifts at MLC.

Immersed in Urban Ministry
From February 14 to 17, a group of 36 MLC students led by Dr. Benjamin Clemons (dean of education) traveled to Milwaukee to gain firsthand experience in urban ministry.

Students learned about the day-to-day of urban education, gained insight from experienced teachers, and connected with students at four WELS schools in Milwaukee: St. John, Risen Savior, St. Marcus, and Mt. Lebanon.

For many students, the experience was eye-opening. “It allowed MLC students to see that, although they may be unfamiliar with urban contexts, the ministry that's happening here is familiar in many ways,” said Dean Clemons. “At the same time, they began to see the exciting challenge of working with students, families, and parishioners from other cultures and backgrounds.”

Thanks for Your Support!
The MLC Ladies’ Auxiliary Bingo Night was a huge success–thanks to you!

Students left smiling and holding delicious treats, cash, gift cards, and beautiful blankets and quilts, all generously donated by MLC’s supporters.

Bingo Night is one of many ways that Ladies’ Auxiliary supports MLC students. Every year, Ladies’ Auxiliary provides funding for multiple scholarships and a variety of campus needs.

This year, they’ve already provided support for Early Ministry Experience I and purchased a table saw for MLC Forum. Upcoming projects include assisting the special education program with community building and recruitment, moveable TVs for presentations, and new curtains for the dormitories.

Indoor Track Conference Championship
MLC’s indoor track and field teams competed in the UMAC Championship on February 23 and 24. The women’s team took fifth place out of eight teams, and the men’s team had their best performance of the season, taking second place.

First-year Sam Plocher (Holy Trinity-Des Moines WA) led the men in the weekend's events and earned first-place in both the high jump and 60-meter hurdles. Sam continued his season in the high jump after the conference championship, participating in the NCAA D-III Nationals on March 8 and 9 in Virginia Beach VA.

Both teams displayed consistency across the running events, with the men’s team earning first place in the 4x400 relay by over 18 seconds and the women’s team earning top-five finishes in multiple races.

MLC College Choir: Piercing the Darkness
The MLC College Choir toured Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin during spring break, sharing the gospel in song with ten WELS congregations and four WELS high schools.

Each worship service and concert allowed the choir to connect with their host congregations. They even had the chance to sing with church members at Resurrection-Maumee OH (pictured).

The choir’s spring tour will conclude on campus with a concert in the Chapel of the Christ on March 17 at 3 pm. The concert will be streamed on MLC’s YouTube channel.
