MLC Forum Presents Hello, Dolly!
Cast, crew, and audiences agree: MLC Forum’s production of Hello, Dolly! was a dazzling show! The cast’s energy and dedication brought the characters, story, and songs to life.
To make the production even more special, MLC welcomed back the casts and staff of Hello, Dolly! from DMLC’s production in 1970 and MLC’s production in 1995. The alumni met with this year’s cast and crew, talked about their experiences in the production, and enjoyed fellowship together.

Cross Country at UMAC Championship
With friends and fans cheering them on, both the MLC men’s and women’s cross country teams took second at the UMAC Championship on Saturday, October 28.
Both teams earned four All-Conference honors. Maya Habben (Mt. Calvary-Flagstaff AZ), Caleb Lash (First-Racine WI), and Camden Sulzle (St. John-Redwood Falls MN) received first-team honors, while Katelyn Mensching (St. Luke-Watertown WI), Claire Tomhave (St. Paul-Lake Mills WI), Leah Nushart (Zion-Greenleaf WI), Micah Schibbelhut (St. Paul-Onalaska WI), and Joshua Zander (Immanuel-Manitowoc WI) earned second-team.
Consistency was the hallmark of both teams this season. The men finished in second place for a third consecutive season, and although the women were unable to defend their UMAC championship crown from the past two seasons, they finished another year with balanced performances from all runners.

On Saturday, October 7, Ladies’ Auxiliary held their annual meeting on the MLC campus. Auxiliary day is filled with both business and fun–from voting on funding projects to seeing a sneak peek of this fall’s musical, Hello, Dolly!
This year, Auxiliary members heard a “State of the College” address by President Rich Gurgel and a presentation by Vice President Scott Schmudlach about changes to the campus.
They also voted to fund exciting projects for MLC: a table saw for the Forum workroom, a new preseminary early ministry program, and community building and recruitment for the undergraduate special education program. These are in addition to the scholarships and programs they help fund every year!
What inspires this support? The current president of Ladies’ Auxiliary, Connie Scharf (DMLC ’75), says it’s love for MLC. Ladies’ Auxiliary provides opportunities for fellowship among women who want to support the MLC student body. “Knowing you’re helping these students to prepare for full-time gospel ministry is so rewarding!” Connie says.

On their fall tour, the MLC College Choir performed at churches and schools in Minnesota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa.
The choir members also had the opportunity to visit Ms. Joanna Smith’s (MLC ’09) classroom at Trinity-Hoskins NE, where they were impressed by Ms. Smith’s welcoming spirit and Christian leadership.
Choir members talked with the students about campus life and ministry training–and of course MLC’s unlimited pizza and ice cream.
The purpose of the visit was to encourage the Trinity students to consider public ministry, but according to senior Brooke Flunker (St. Paul-Winneconne WI), the choir members were encouraged by the Trinity students too!
“As a senior,” Brooke says, “it can be daunting to think about where the Lord will have me serve in just a few months. The Trinity students’ excitement, kindness, and love for MLC were exactly what I needed to remind me that so many people from across the nation keep current and future MLC students in their prayers.”

Evangelism Day 2023 began with a worship service reminding both the campus family and visitors of the urgency of sharing gospel truth with all people.
President Rich Gurgel presided over the opening service, and Pastor Doug Tomhave (DMLC ’94, WLS ’98) delivered a sermon on the importance of sharing the Savior, a God of grace and truth, with those searching for their own truths in a confusing and sin-filled world.
The Evangelism Day speakers then presented their own experiences with outreach, discussing the blessings and challenges of ministry in a variety of contexts. The campus family learned about work being done in schools, churches, and special ministries both in the United States and around the world.
After the official presentations ended, the campus family was invited to a social hour in the MLC cafeteria. There they could talk one-on-one with the speakers to learn more about their particular ministries and experiences.

Wind Symphony: Colors and Contours
tim•bre |'tambər| The character or quality of a musical sound or voice as distinct from its pitch and intensity.
In colloquial terms, musicians often refer to timbre as “color.” In a wind band, no single instrument family is considered the “core” timbre of the ensemble. Rather, the wind band is a varied mix of woodwinds, brass, and percussions, equally contributing their unique colors to bring a composition to life.
Please join the Martin Luther College Wind Symphony for Colors and Contours on Sunday, November 19, at 3:00 pm in the MLC Auditorium. Also featured on the program are three student conductors who are majoring in instrumental music: Richard Giese (Eternal Love-Appleton WI), Joseph Panning (St. Paul-Litchfield MN), and Emma Pufahl (Emmanuel-Tempe AZ).
The concert is free and open to the public. Can’t make it in person? Catch the livestream on MLC’s YouTube channel.
