Celina Poon (19 | Boston, Massachusetts), a student at Carnegie Mellon University, is a young leader working at the intersection of arts, design, and civic engagement. Through her work with the Commonwealth Seminar, an organization dedicated to removing barriers to civic participation through civic education, Celina has helped more than 300 young people discover new ways to engage with their communities and make their voices heard. As an intern, Celina led planning for the organization’s youth conference, coordinating speakers and designing programming that empowered young people to explore civic leadership and community issues. She also spearheaded the creation of the Arts & Culture Fair, bringing together 12 local artists and community organizations to showcase their work and spark conversations about how art can inspire civic participation, strengthen community identity, and drive positive change.
Growing up in an immigrant family, Celina was not exposed to civic education until later in life. Her experience helped her recognize how a lack of access to civic knowledge and resources can prevent individuals and families from participating in decisions that affect their lives. She understands that many young people and immigrant families have ideas, concerns, and a desire to make a difference but may not know where to start or how to engage with government. This personal connection inspires Celina to create opportunities for others to find their voices and become active members of their communities. Through her work with the Commonwealth Seminar, she has helped make civic engagement more accessible and engaging, using youth programming and the arts to connect people with community issues.
