March 10, 2019
Hello MLWS Families...

We have shifted our clocks forward by an hour, the days are perceptibly longer and Spring will be upon us shortly! Parent Council is pleased to share this issue of the newsletter with the community, which includes a Parent Council update, highlights activities of various classes and other school-related topics, offers Classified listings and provides information about upcoming events in the community.

Parent Council is not holding monthly meetings during the 2018-19 school year. Instead, we will aim to work on our priority projects in small working groups, which will meet as necessary to advance their efforts. These projects include the Enchanted Walk, Faculty Nourishment, Food Drives at Music Shares, a Welcome Committee for new families, and this newsletter. If you are interested in being involved in one of the working groups, or if you have an idea for another initiative you would like to work on through Parent Council, please send an email to . Please consider getting involved and offering some of your time to one of our projects. Many hands make light work!

A Peek Into the Classroom
From Mrs. Workman:

Our ‘First Grade Ready’ Kindergarten children have started on their sewing project, making a baby. The children are excited for this challenge, and for the new adventure of First Grade. The Red King/Queen assessment is underway as well. This assessment, which is brought in the form of a story/journey with tasks to be performed by the child, looks at the child’s development and how best to support the child and their family, as they enter into the grades.
From Ms. Rosenstein:

The Sixth Grade recently finished a block of Business Math. We focused on functions such as how to calculate percentages, interest, and compound interest. Over the past few weeks, each sixth-grader has been the owner and operator of their own "Cafe of the Day." Each student did market research throughout the school to find out what types of snack items the children might purchase. Then, the cafe owners determined how much product they would need and shopped for the items. Each calculated how much they would need to mark the items up in order to make a profit. They named their cafes, created their own advertising, designed the menu boards, and hired their classmates. Get ready for final "Cafe of the Day" this Friday, March 15! Profits will be donated to a local food bank.
