The Chamber Launches
“Operation Winter Warmth”
In a year of tremendous challenge, many families are feeling more of an economic pinch than usual. Good Samaritan Family Services, an Antrim County non-profit, is attempting to meet those needs by providing families with food, clothing, and emergency services. Bec Johnson, Resale and Pantry Director, says this year’s most urgent needs are snowpants and snowboots for children. In response, “Operation Winter Warmth” has been launched by the Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will be accepting cash, check, and credit card donations to help purchase 100 pairs of snowpants in varying sizes for boys and girls, as well as snowboots. Sam’s Club in Traverse City will be the retail provider and has also generously donated $1000 to the project.

“Good Samaritan does tremendous work for Antrim County families, and we are proud to support their efforts,” said Tom Shelder, Chamber board president. “We’re confident our great community will step up and help us meet this goal of 100 snowpants and snowboots.”

Support Small Business

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation has launched its #SupportLocalMI campaign to help raise awareness of the impact we can make when we choose to support the Michigan small business community. According to the Michigan Retailers Association, if only one in 10 out-of-state purchases were switched to local stores, Michigan would gain $1.2 billion in increased economic activity, creating 10,600 new jobs........Read more

Holiday Window Night Award

Scheduled for the week of December 7, 2020
Sponsored by Elk Rapids Women

Dear Elk Rapids business owners,

Are you ready to show your holiday spirit? Mark your calendars and get your seasonal decorations out for the annual Window Night Award, sponsored by Elk Rapids Women.

This tradition started in the 1950s when the local Business and Professional Women’s group wanted to encourage the community to decorate for Santa’s arrival. Though our group’s name has changed, the tradition has not! Each year our committee of anonymous judges visits local businesses to pick the best holiday display. Judging is based on:
Christmas Appeal 30%
Originality 25%
Work and Effort 15%
Visual Appeal 15%
Neatness 15%

All decorated business windows/displays in the Elk Rapids area will be judged. If you think you might be missed due to your out-of-the-way location, just send us your address and directions, and we’ll make sure you are on the judges’ list.

Judging will commence after dark during the week of December 7, so remember to spotlight your decorations and keep the lights on! The committee will announce the winner on Thursday, December 10. Winners will be notified and their names will be posted in the Elk Rapids News, as well as on the Elk Rapids Women’s Facebook page.

If you have questions, contact us at elkrapidswomen@gmail.com.

remember to Keep those lights on!
During this time it would be so cool to "Light up the Town" with Christmas lights and decorations! Something everyone can enjoy.

Turtles and Treehouses!

To: Friends and Family everywhere
From: Cheri and Raven Hill
Date: November 28, 2020
Re: Greetings from Raven Hill!

Hello to Everyone! Raven Hill’s Treehouse was built in 2008 in response to author, Richard Louv’s book, LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS. Louv writes of nature-deficit disorder, lamenting the time children spend inside “plugged in” and encouraging parents and teachers to help kids reconnect with the natural world around them, in an effort to encourage creative and critical thinking skills. Designed in the shape of a maple leaf, the Treehouse draws families to the woods, as they explore inside, outside and around the structure. There are voice pipes for communicating and periscopes focused on the two trailheads. Visitors can write on the slate board & enjoy the marble roll.  Continue Reading

STEM Career Investigator
Sustaining STEM Opportunities Across our Region

(TRAVERSE CITY - Northwest Lower Michigan) Newton's Road is delighted to announce the launch of the Career Investigator for Northwest Michigan. This online platform helps students explore STEM-related careers that are in high demand in our region, as well as nationally recognized local programs that result in great-paying jobs--often before students graduate.
Jason Slade, Director of Technical Academic Area at NMC, and his staff have been a key provider of career pathway data. He states: "The Career Investigator website built by Newton's Road has already become a critical component of our career advising. While the tool is still in development, it has already become one of my "go to" resources to highlight the exciting high-wage, high-skill STEM careers in the region. The Career Investigator isn't just for high school students, but is beneficial to parents, adults seeking retraining, high school counselors and the community in general. It highlights cutting edge careers and provides the educational pathway to get there. These pathways include everything from Career Tech Center programs to apprenticeships to certificates to 2 and 4-year degrees. As the Career Investigator grows, it will become an even bigger part of informing the community of the opportunities that exist in the region. I am very excited by this and thankful for the work of Newton's Road!".......................
