Are we ready for this EV Revolution?
As each month passes, another manufacturer unveils their version of an Electric Vehicle (EV) for Canadian drivers to consider. With the environment at the top of mind of most Canadians and the cost of gas, consumers have become enamored with the EV.

The Canadian government also supports the EV revolution, with some provinces, such as BC and QC, providing sales incentives for EVs to support the commitment to Zero-Emissions by 2035. To help the commuter some cities even allow EV’s in the HOV lane, with a single occupant. These vehicles are at the cutting edge of our industry’s technological advances and offer consumers an exhilarating yet eco-friendly driving experience.

The EV revolution is here – do Extended Service Plans (ESP) have the same impact to EVs as they do for their gas-powered counterparts? We certainly think so.

EVs are high-tech, and largely computer-driven, which could cause an increase in potential issues that require sensitive components to be replaced over time. Additionally, EVs typically have a higher up-front cost and a longer ownership period and as such, could begin experiencing mechanical issues as they age. The industry is advancing so quickly, some of the technology has not been fully tested, so some of these vehicles may require software upgrades, or computer chip replacements.

While it is true that the majority of EVs have longer powertrain coverages than gas-powered engines, with less parts within the powertrain, this longer coverage does not always extend to the electronic or technologic components in a vehicle. Regardless of what is propelling the vehicle, whether gas/hybrid/electric, there are many parts in a vehicle that are at risk of failure outside the powertrain.

Computerized driver safety components like cameras, radar, anti-collision and parking sensors, along with creature comforts like GPS Navigation, touchscreens, auto-adjusting headlight, auto-adjusting mirrors, and climate-controlled seating have become more mainstream and standard, regardless of vehicle type. With advances in technology and the integration of these types of features, the need for ESPs has become more relevant to car buyers, EV or otherwise, than ever.

iA Dealer Services believes that a comprehensive ESP can offer drivers’ peace of mind and maximum value insuring that the vehicle ownership experience is exceptional. We have created a full suite of coverage options to choose from that offer simplicity and convenience.
