Dear Mica Mountain Families,

I hope all of you had a fantastic and safe Thanksgiving with time to spend with your family and friends.

We are approaching the end of the first semester with grades becoming final on December 17^th. Please login to PowerSchool at https://ps.vail.k12.az.us/public/home.html to find up-to-date grades for your child.

Below is the Final Exam week schedule. Early Final Exams are not permitted.

This winter break, we want everyone to get time with family and friends and encourage all of you to relax over winter break without worrying about any make up work or credit recovery. To ensure students and staff do not work over break, we will be offering a Winter Credit Recovery opportunity in January for most of our core classes. If a student’s final semester grade is between 50-59% in a class, they can sign up for FREE Winter Credit Recovery and make up the credit without taking the entire class over. Please contact Amy Kuhn at kuhna@vailschooldistrict.org for information.

Tax credit contributions for 2021 can be donated from now through April 14, 2022. Tax credit contributions are for extracurricular programs with 100% dollar for dollar credit to anyone who pays state taxes. Please visit the VUSD Tax Credit website at https://vailtaxcredits.org/ and pick your program today. Every dollar up to $200 for single persons or $400 for married couple will result in 100% back in your state tax return.

I am humbled to be the principal of Mica Mountain High School. The past two years have been difficult on everyone but even with the adversity our staff, students, and parents have handled the pandemic and its issues with grace, class, and kindness. Thank you for your support and thank you for helping us build one of the best schools in Arizona.

JINGLE TRAIL RUN

Mica Mountain Cross Country invites you to come and run or walk at the 16th annual Vail Jingle Trail! These races continue the legacy of the Vail Jingle Trail and for the first time will be hosted by Mica Mountain High School. The Mica Mountain Cross Country team will be sponsoring the race and looking to engage the community in the healthy lifestyle activity of running and walking while collecting toys for Toys for Tots. Every registered runner/walker is requested to bring a new & unwrapped toy for donation. Our Cross Country team and school would like to thank you for considering coming to this event, being a part of the Mica Mountain culture, and helping to brighten the holidays for those less fortunate.

The course will primarily be on the Mica Mountain Cross Country course with a few modifications. The race will start and finish on the school track (which is new and awesome!) and include "Thunder Hill" to the southwest and the "Rolling Hills" behind the visitor bleachers. A recent "Day of Service" with many stakeholders helped improve the terrain and with the help of the Green Valley Pecan Company, 10 generous truck fulls of pecan shells have been added to the hills. This natural material is a challenge to run on. Terrain will vary from the track, asphalt, dirt, grass, and hills with something to challenge even the most seasoned of runners!

Check out some of the Cross Country team on top of Thunder Hill the other day cleaning up the course so it's ready for December 11th!

Finish Your Semester SMART

The winter holiday season is a great time to relax and enjoy festivities with family and friends. However, as a student, you must first take care of any school-related loose ends and do well on your final exams. It can be a bit overwhelming when you realize that you only have a few weeks left to complete assignments for each class and study effectively for finals, especially if you struggle with time management skills and self-discipline. However, taking out a calendar and setting goals is a great way to minimize stress and manage end-of-semester academic obligations. One of the best ways to make your goal-setting more effective is by creating S.M.A.R.T. goals. SMART is an acronym that means your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based.

When setting SMART goals ask yourself the following questions.

Specific – What is it that I need/want to do? Example: I need to raise my English grade by one letter grade.

Measurable – How will I know I have achieved my goal(s)? Example: My English grade will increase from a C to a B.

Achievable – Is this something that is within my power to accomplish? Example: There are enough assignment points left and if I do well on the final exam I can increase my grade.

Realistic – Is this a goal that I can realistically achieve? Example: If I stick to my study schedule, I can achieve this.

Timely – Can I achieve this goal by December 17^th? Example: I cannot increase my grade from a C to an A this semester, but I can achieve a B and work at achieving an A by the end of the school year.

There are additional ways to enhance your opportunities to achieve your SMART goals.

Set smaller, step-by-step goals towards the larger goals.
Be sure to set up a comfortable, distraction-free work environment that will help you to maintain focus.
Build-in short, refreshing work breaks.
Reward yourself for achieving steps towards your goals. Give yourself a big reward for achieving your big goals.

If you follow the SMART goal approach you can finish the fall semester strong and also establish habits for continued academic achievement and success!

The joy of December is upon us and as we think about giving we ask you to think about giving the gift of service. This month we invite your family to complete yet another Family Dare. We challenge you to “lend a helping hand.”

**As a reminder, each Dare utilizes the C.A.R.E model, (Conversation starters, Acts of kindness, Recreation and rest, and Expression of love) and lets you know what the area of focus is.**

Class of 2022: Ticket to Your Future

ALL seniors should complete The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which opened on October 1^st. Even if you think you may not go to college right away or are not sure about your college plans, you should still complete the FAFSA. Go to the official FAFSA website to apply. Funds are limited and the earlier you apply the better the chances for getting money.
Apply to all of your colleges and universities using your SchooLinks account. When you receive your acceptance letter, bring it to your counselor so they can get you on the Wall of the Future and be entered to win an iPad to be given out at Honors Night.
