Mission: Uganda

While we were busy sending our first international travel team since the start of COVID-19 and planning our biggest event of the year (our gala), we shipped a container! On Thursday, August 17, our dynamic crew loaded a 40-foot container destined for Wentz Medical Center in Kinshasa, Uganda.

We are proud to partner with Africa Renewal Ministries (ARM) on this project. They have many ministries, but here is a snippet from ARM about their work in healthcare:

Renewal Healthcare is a Christ-centered healthcare system empowering individuals and communities to attain and sustain a higher quality of life through holistic care. We started Renewal Healthcare in 2005, and it continues to offer diagnostic treatment, basic surgical procedures, and community health programs. We have one hospital, Wentz Medical Center, and four clinics that service rural areas. Our mission is brought to life in part by our donors whose contributions help fund innovation and excellence, making an impact on our ability to improve the health of our patients and communities.”

This shipment contained 1096 pieces with a total volume of 2522 cubic feet. It is valued at over $807,700! We’re grateful for your support, which funds projects like this.

Fiji Travel Teams Update

Our first medical team since the COVID pandemic had a wildly successful mission trip and returned home on August 8. Our energetic team of 25 held seven medical clinics, saw 684 patients, gave out 482 pairs of glasses, and best of all, led 345 people to the Lord.

We’re already planning another Fiji medical mission in July 2024. Will you join us? Let us know if you’re interested in future travel by joining our travel team email list. Visit medministries.org and scroll to the bottom of our homepage to sign up.

Fiji 2023: Our daily life, clinics, exploring, and building relationships

Thank you to all 25 teammates, our prayer warriors, those who supported trips, and those who partnered with us by donating medical supplies through our Amazon wish list.

After the completion of our scheduled medical clinics, team leaders Tom and Nancy had one more task. They traveled across the country to deliver the remaining glasses, 518 pairs, to Dr. Tarai Rakabu, chief ophthalmologist at the Lautoka Public Hospital in Lautoka, Fiji.

Seven members of our 2023 Fiji medical mission team reunited at the annual gala.

2023 Gala: Faithfully Serve Him

It was a night of food, fellowship, fundraising, and fun. Our Partnership Council outdid itself, and we are grateful for the wonderful turnout and support to fund the ministry! A great night was had by all. Did you attend? Here’s a Cliff’s Notes version if you weren’t able to make it:

Our guest speaker, Dr. David Jeffcoach, spoke about his time as a surgeon in Soddo, Ethiopia. We are proud to have partnered with Dr. Jeffcoach and the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) with a 40-foot container of supplies and equipment in November 2021. He shared about the lack of medical care, especially surgery in Africa. In a shocking illustration, he compared the concentration of surgeons in Ethiopia vs. the Fresno/Clovis area. He shared that if we had the same number of surgeons per capita as Ethiopia, we’d have just two surgeons for the entire Fresno/Clovis area!

We received an update from MMI board chairman Dr. Ralph Handly. MMI continues to ship full and partial shipments and has plans to increase this. We are looking to increase volunteer numbers and raise funds; both have declined during the COVID-19 years. The largest task is finding affordable warehouse storage to grow our shipping capabilities.

We also heard a special 25th-anniversary message from our founders, Tom and Nancy Stoeckel, about MMI’s work from 1998 to today. MMI has had such strong support over the years, and many volunteers have been with MMI since the beginning. They went on to talk about the current needs; our most pressing need is a warehouse. They shared that we are losing our current shipping warehouse on Cedar Ave this month and are actively looking for another warehouse space to house our inventory and is also equipped with a loading dock to ship. We’d like to talk to you if you know of anything available!

November 3, 2021: 40 feet of medical supplies and equipment is packed and shipped to Soddo Christian Hospital.
