As we move into December, we’re excited to share several upcoming events that will bring joy, connection, and celebration to our school community. This time of year is always special, and we look forward to gathering with students and families throughout the month. As part of our ongoing commitment to provide quality education to your students, I emphasize the importance of regular school attendance. Regular attendance ensures that children gain the maximum benefits from our educational and social programs, which help build strong foundations for their future successes.
We understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise that prevent students from attending school. In such cases, we request that you notify the school office as early as possible. Please provide a valid reason for your child’s absence. By doing so, you help us maintain accurate records, ensure the safety of our students, and avoid possible truancy issues.
Below are some reminders when excusing your child’s absence:
- Notification: Please call or email the school office by 9:00 AM on the day your child will be absent.
- Medical Excuses: Please provide a healthcare provider’s note or digital evidence.
- Planned Absences/Vacations: Please inform the office at least a day in advance.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

| | Medications that need to be administered to our students are required to be in the original containers for both prescribed or over the counter medications. A medication form needs to be completed for each medication including cough drops. Medication forms may be found HERE. | | |

This month in ACP, our students are diving into discovering who they are and who they can become!
Students in grades 6–8 are exploring their passions and future possibilities through a mix of 7 Mindsets lessons and interactive Xello activities. Each week, our 5th graders also jump into 7 Mindsets learning that encourages them to uncover their strengths, celebrate what makes them unique, and dream big.
As students reflect on their interests and the things that light them up, they begin to imagine the many exciting paths their futures could take. Every grade level gets a chance to explore in a hands-on, meaningful way:
- 6th Grade: Students search for careers that match their personal interests—opening their eyes to jobs they may have never even heard of!
- 7th Grade: Students complete an interest inventory and reflect on what their results say about their personality, passions, and strengths.
- 8th Grade: Students dive into an online lesson that breaks down their personalized career matches and what those paths might look like.
Across all grades, ACP this month is about curiosity, confidence, and imagining the possibilities. Our students are not just planning for the future—they’re discovering it, one mindset at a time!

Tip: Access the Canvas Calendar to see upcoming assignments, tests, and events. The Canvas Calendar is a valuable tool for both students and parents to stay organized and on top of upcoming assignments, tests, and school events.
By utilizing the Canvas Calendar, you and your child can:
- Reduce stress: Stay organized and avoid last-minute rushes.
- Improve time management: Plan study sessions and prioritize tasks effectively.
- Increase academic success: Ensure assignments are completed on time and prepare for tests adequately.
Trick: Enhance Your Planning with Calendars
- Add Personal Reminders: The Canvas Calendar isn't just for school events! You can add your own personal reminders, such as doctor appointments, extracurricular activities, and family events. This keeps all your important dates in one convenient place.
- Sync with Your Calendar: Seamlessly integrate school schedules with your personal life by syncing the Canvas Calendar with your existing calendar apps like Google Calendar or Outlook. This allows for better planning and coordination of family activities.
By utilizing these tricks, you can maximize the efficiency of the Canvas Calendar and create a more streamlined and organized family schedule.

Canvas Calendar and How to Sync with Other Calendars

As the 7th & 8th grade boys basketball teams continue through their schedules, it’s time to start thinking about our other winter sports! In December, there will be sign-ups for both 7th & 8th-grade girls' basketball, along with wrestling. Students can sign up in their social studies and science classrooms if they’re interested in participating.
Both sports will start practicing on January 5, 2026. A reminder that you must have a current physical on file at MMS in order to participate. Any physical given 4/2/2024 is considered current. If your athlete needs a physical, please plan to have it completed prior to the first practice. Athletes without current physicals will not be allowed to practice or play until one is on file. HOW MANY TIMES A WEEK SHOULD YOU BE READING?
AT LEAST 6-7 NIGHTS!
Did you know that just 15–20 minutes of reading at home each night can make a big difference in your child’s success at school? Regular reading strengthens vocabulary, improves writing skills, boosts focus, and builds confidence in all subjects.
It also gives students a chance to relax, explore new ideas, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
You can support your child by helping them find books they enjoy, setting aside a quiet time for reading, or even reading together. Every bit of practice helps, and your encouragement goes a long way!

Homework Help! - Did you know that we have an after school homework support program at Marinette Middle School? Yep…throughout the school year, students are able to work with two certified teachers who manage a quiet environment where students can complete daily assignments or get caught up with missing assignments. This is a support that can start the second week of school. If you would like more information, please reach out to Beth Horn at bhorn@marinette.k12.wi.us

MMS lost & found - If you or your student is missing anything, please stop by our building office to claim your personal objects. Any items not claimed by December 4th will be brought to a local donation center.

Student Cell Phone Use - For the 2025-2026 school year, MMS students will be expected to keep their cell phones turned off and put away in their lockers throughout the school day, including the lunch and recess period. We are hoping that this will assist our students with engaging in appropriate social activities during those periods and give our students a break from their screens.
