OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS
MESSAGE FROM YOUR BUILDING LEADERS
Safety at MMS:
As part of our ongoing commitment to safety in the middle school, MMS students and staff recently participated in tabletop discussions about how to proactively handle the threat of an intruder or someone in our building looking to cause harm. Just like we practice what we would do in a fire situation with our monthly fire drills, we want to ensure that students and staff feel as prepared as possible to respond to other emergencies.
We understand that discussing some of these emergencies can be unsettling and lead to further questions from our students. If/when those questions come up at home, please contact the main office or one of your child's teachers so we can help you navigate those conversations.
Happy Holidays!

Marinette Middle School is proud to announce that 37 students currently have PERFECT ATTENDANCE (0 missed school days) and 227 students who have only missed 3 days of school or less. These students have been and will continue to be celebrated at school, on social media and around the community. We would like to thank these students and their families for putting a joint effort into making school important on a daily basis.

Social-Emotional Learning Activities To Do With Your Student At Home:
Empathy in Action
Spend some time watching a show or movie. At any given time, pause and discuss how the characters are feeling. You might ask: “ How are they feeling?” and “How would you feel if that happened to you?” Use this conversation to build on considering how others feel, discussing social cues, and caring about their emotions.
Mindful Breathing
Explain that mindful breathing is just focusing on breathing in and out to help calm our minds and bodies. There are many different mindful breathing exercises to try out.
- “ Cool off the pizza”- In this activity, have kids pretend they have a hot slice of pizza in front of them. Slowly breathe in to smell the pizza and breath out to cool it down.
- Bubble breathing- Practice breathing i and out as you blow bubbles.
Just Chat
Start by asking kids questions about anything examples:
- What are your favorite foods?
- What three items would you bring to a deserted island?
- What three words best describe you?
- What is your favorite place to eat?
- If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Mindfulness 5-4-3-2-1
Have kids look around their room to find 5 things they can see, 4 things they can touch, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste. This is a grounding exercise that can help manage tough emotions and provide a mental reset when needed.

Medications that need to be administered to our students are required to be in the original containers for both prescribed or over the counter medications. A medication form needs to be completed for each medication including cough drops. Medication forms may be found HERE.

HOW DOES WHAT YOUR STUDENTS LEARN
CONNECT TO THEIR FUTURE?
| |
January is a time for reflecting and looking toward the future. That aligns perfectly with the Wisconsin ACP model: KNOW-EXPLORE-PLAN-GO. Activities in school support this model. Can your student answer these questions?
- KNOW- Who am I?
- What am I interested in doing?
- What are my goals?
- EXPLORE- What are my options?
- How can I find out more about my future?
- What can I do right now to help me explore?
- PLAN- What experiences would help me?
- What extracurricular activities are available for me?
- What classes can I choose to take?
- What can I look forward to in middle school and high school?
- GO- Do it!
- How can my teachers help me?
- How can my family help me?
- What is available in my community?

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS & HAPPENINGS
The Marinette School District has been updating its teaching materials in response to a new state law, Act 20, which was enacted on July 19, 2023. This law emphasizes students' "right to read" by focusing on essential skills such as phonological and phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, rapid naming, writing instruction, and more—key areas that support overall reading success. These important skills are reflected in the updated CKLA and Amplify materials now being used at Marinette Middle School.
To learn more about Act 20 and how it's being implemented in schools across Wisconsin, please visit https://dpi.wi.gov/wi-reads/act-20-faq. Thank you for your continued support in your child's education!

Skyward Contacts - It's crucial to keep your skyward information updated to ensure quick access in case your child is ill or during an emergency. You can update your information on Skyward or by email: sschwart@marinette.k12.wi.us, jhaldima@marinette.k12.wi.us

MMS lost & found has grown very large over the last few weeks. If you or your student is missing anything, please stop in our building office to claim your personal objects. Any items not claimed by Friday, January 10th will be brought to a local donation center.
| |
Student Cell Phone Use - For the 2024-2025 school year, MMS students will be expected to keep their cell phones turned off and put away in their lockers throughout the school day, including the lunch and recess period. We are hoping that this will assist our students with engaging in appropriate social activities during those periods and give our students a break from their screens.
|
Chromebook Care - Chromebooks are tools that our students need each and every day here at Marinette Middle School. We are beginning to provide new students with cases for their Chromebooks. Despite this we will continue to work with our students, and families, about how best to care for their equipment so that it can be available to them each day of the four years they are at Marinette Middle School.
|
Homework Help! - Did you know that we have an after school homework support program at Marinette Middle School? Yep…throughout the school year, students are able to work with two certified teachers who manage a quiet environment where students can complete daily assignments or get caught up with missing assignments. This is a support that can start the second week of school. If you would like more information, please reach out to Beth Horn at bhorn@marinette.k12.wi.us
