February is a great time to focus on the health of our hearts. Thankfully, our transportation systems can give us access to the resources needed to stay fit. In fact, a simple 10,000-step daily routine can go a long way to improving blood pressure and reducing cardiovascular disease. Even better, if we can make our communities more walkable, we can give ourselves and our neighbors more opportunities to stay healthy and active. Creating walkable communities is one of the Broward MPO’s priorities, and through our Complete Streets Initiative we are working to make it happen across Broward County. Complete Streets is an innovative idea to increase accessibility to transportation for people of all ages and abilities. Not only does it provide an avenue for walkers, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders, it also fosters a sense of safety for users. These streets have a significant impact on the livability of communities, as they allow everyone - from young adults to older adults - to travel without feeling anxious or intimidated. Ultimately, creating these streets helps to promote public transportation and walking-friendly areas.
