Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart | |
This week I will be attending the 2023 National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) Conference in Washington, D.C. This event serves as an important platform for members of regional councils, councils of governments (COGs), regional planning and development agencies, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), and other regional organizations to advocate for a unified approach to solving issues facing local communities. The passionate group of elected officials and professionals associated with NARC member organizations demonstrate incredible dedication to improving their communities through the implementation of strategic investment plans and collaborative partnerships between public and private entities. It's truly inspiring to see the work being done by these individuals to create lasting change in their regions. At the conference, the fragility of our country's airlines and infrastructure will be discussed. The situation needs immediate attention and solutions from both the public and private sector alike. Redundancy is needed for regional and national travel. Here in South Florida, we are lucky on two counts. First, we have Tri-Rail and Brightline that provide rail services utilizing existing tracks. And second, Broward County has funds, through the transportation sales tax, to extend local infrastructure and services to better connect these rail lines with residents and businesses. The Broward MPO is partnering with others to bring more intercity rail back to our historic downtowns. We hope that the success of local rail systems here can help form part of a new regional interstate railway network, and we will continue working to make that vision a reality.
