MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

Welcome to another edition of Mobility Monday. The Broward MPO hosted a workshop with our planning partners to discuss the quiet zone on the Florida East Coast rail corridor. This 26-mile railway which runs through our historic downtowns has been a quiet zone since 2018 when Brightline began. A quiet zone is a segment of rail where the engineer does not regularly sound the horn, which means there is less noise for surrounding residents and businesses. Unfortunately, some drivers and pedestrians who cross the railroad tracks have been careless and attempted to beat the train. Some win, but those who lose are injured or worse, killed. This widespread reckless behavior has brought us national attention, making our rail system infamous. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has sent a letter challenging us to defend the existence of the quiet zone. Our region partnered to institute the quiet zone and we remain committed to it to ensure our quality of life is maintained.
