 |  | As another calendar year draws to a close, I want to share a project that embodies the mission and vision of the MPO, and the importance of long-range planning. We refer to it as the Loxahatchee Mobility Project, and it extends along Loxahatchee Road from the Arthur Marshall Loxahatchee Refuge to SR-7. This transformative project, first identified in our 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), which was adopted 14 years ago in 2009, is a testament to the dedication, collaborative spirit, and visionary approach adopted by our team at the Broward MPO, our local partners in the City of Parkland, and Broward County. The project is designed to improve multimodal mobility, strengthen safety standards, and elevate the overall experience for all users of this corridor. With key features such as a new turn lane, buffered bicycle lanes, continuous sidewalk facilities, and traffic calming measures (like roundabouts), this project tackles current traffic congestion issues and enhances safety. Upon completion, this 6.25-mile corridor will offer residents and visitors direct multimodal access to the conservation levee and nature preserve. Throughout the project, an open dialogue was maintained with our local communities to integrate their collective vision into the project. Construction commenced in October 2023 and is scheduled to be completed in late 2026. The Loxahatchee Mobility Project exemplifies our commitment to safety, and the important role the MPO plays in coordinating funding from various levels of government, including federal, city, and county. Without substantial support from the City of Parkland and Broward County, this project would not have happened. I want to thank them, along with FDOT and the federal government for being a part of our journey to improve mobility and safety on Broward's roads. We look forward to continuing to work with all of our partners to build a brighter future for Broward County.

Lauderhill Vice Mayor Joins Broward MPO for Thriving Communities Meeting in Washington, D.C. | |
 | Last week, staff from the Broward MPO were joined by Lauderhill Vice Mayor Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin in Washington, D.C. for the first Thriving Communities Program Convening. The Broward MPO is a recipient of the Thriving Communities Program which will bring technical assistance training to cities. Broward County has experienced rapid population growth since the mid-twentieth century, developing from a resort area of 84,000 residents in 1950 to a diverse metro center of nearly 2 million. A major deficit in affordable housing has put severe hardships on already cost-burdened residents. Central Broward County has been identified as an area of underinvestment. The goals of the Thriving Communities Program are to bolster the staff capacity of municipal governments within central Broward and the regional transportation and land use authorities to plan and develop local transit-oriented, affordable housing strategies and to facilitate the coordination of regional land use and long-range transportation planning between partner agencies. This presents an exciting opportunity to work in close cooperation with municipalities throughout Central Broward, fostering our shared commitment to the objectives of the Thriving Communities Program. | |

The Broward MPO is incredibly proud to honor Dr. George L. Hanbury II, an accomplished leader and academic visionary, as one of our distinguished State of the Region Award Honorees. Dr. Hanbury will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at our annual award celebration, on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. Throughout his stellar career, Dr. Hanbury has been dedicated to cultivating growth and excellence in the region. Serving as the President and CEO of Nova Southeastern University (NSU), his impact has stretched beyond the borders of the university campus, inspiring not just his students, but our whole community. Dr. Hanbury has worked tirelessly to refocus and reinvent NSU, molding it into an institution renowned for integrity, academic excellence, innovation, and community involvement. This transformation, marked by the implementation of Vision 2020 and its successor, Vision 2025, has paved the way for NSU to achieve the coveted Carnegie Foundation dual designation of Community Engaged and High Research Activity — making NSU one of only 59 universities in the U.S to hold this distinction. But his influence has not been confined to academia alone. Before turning his hand to higher education administration,
Dr. Hanbury amassed three decades of invaluable public service as a city manager. In this role, he provided insightful and prudent leadership to the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Portsmouth, Virginia; and Virginia Beach, Virginia. This wide-ranging experience brings a holistic perspective to his role at NSU, promoting cross-sector partnerships, innovation, and effective community engagement.
It is our pleasure to celebrate and spotlight Dr. Hanbury for his passion, leadership, and steadfast dedication to the enrichment of our community and the advancement of higher education in our region. Congratulations, Dr. Hanbury! Your tireless efforts to innovate and improve have truly made a difference and your leadership continues to inspire us all.
