MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

Happy Monday! On July 15, the Broward MPO is back with a new podcast, and this time Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr joins me. Commissioner Furr represents District 6, which includes Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Pembroke Park, and West Park. In this episode, we discuss various topics from affordable housing challenges to addressing climate change and sea-level rise. Commissioner Furr provides insight into how Broward County is dealing with affordable housing challenges. The County recognizes that affordable housing is a critical need for the community, and they’re exploring different solutions to provide more options for residents. Our conversation shifts to transportation and the recent sales tax initiative that voters approved. The tax funds have already been used in creating new bus routes, add bike lanes, and make much-needed improvements to major highways in the County. Commissioner Furr highlights some of the initiatives the County is taking to address these issues. Tune in to hear the lighthearted question I asked the Commissioner regarding the origin of his name and his response, a delightful and heartwarming story about his older sister! You can listen to the full episode on our website or any of your preferred podcast platforms. If you’ve got an idea for a guest on our podcast, feel free to drop us a line at [email protected].

Broward MPO Participates in Interfaith Community Leaders Meeting in June

On June 14, 2023, Broward County Commissioner Hazelle Rogers brought together local religious leaders for an Interfaith Community Leaders Meeting. The focus was the recently approved Live Local Act that increases the options for placement of affordable housing projects. Commissioner Rogers asked the leaders to consider whether they could offer church-owned properties to address housing needs in Broward.

Among the presenters was Broward MPO Deputy Executive Director James Cromar, who talked about the relation between housing and transportation. Housing can be more affordable where it provides convenient access to transit and decreases the demands on the overall household budget.
