 |  | Happy Monday! In this edition of Mobility Monday, we’re talking all things Route to 2050! On May 18, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) held an eTownhall to outline the Route to 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) plan and listen to the communities' ideas about mobility in our region. More than 1,000 people joined the conversation. As we aim for the Vision 2100 of safer streets for all, it's exciting to see the new technologies that will make this vision a reality. The event had a diverse panel of speakers, from both the private and government sectors. The interactive discussion allowed for insightful conversations about the new technologies being implemented and how they will benefit the community. The panelists discussed various innovative ideas such as intelligent traffic management systems, electric public transport, and even new designs for safer roads and crosswalks. The Broward MPO is prioritizing the needs of all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit riders. With new designs for safer crosswalks and protected bike lanes, we’re paving the way for safer and more accessible transportation for everyone, now and 50 years in the future!

Broward MPO Unveils New Rail Safety Campaign | |

The Broward MPO is committed to keeping its residents and visitors safe and has launched an initiative called “Don’t Risk It” to do just that. The collaborative effort, developed with the help of cities including Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Hallandale Beach, aims to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with reckless behavior around trains and railroad crossings and reduce the climbing accident rate in the region. Today, transportation and city officials publicly unveiled the campaign.
Greg Stuart, executive director of Broward MPO, spoke on the matter, expressing the organization’s commitment to safety: “We take the safety of our residents and visitors seriously, which is why we are proud to take the lead on this important issue. Given the recent changes in the quiet zone, it is essential for both pedestrians and drivers to stay attentive near railroad crossings. Through collaboration between our cities and educating the public about train safety, we can make a real difference and prevent avoidable accidents.”
Recent statistics from the Federal Railroad Administration report that in 2022, 2,188 highway-rail grade crossing collisions occurred nationwide, resulting in 274 fatalities and 777 injuries. Florida placed fourth on the top 25 list with 117 collisions, 21 deaths, and 51 injuries.
The “Don’t Risk It” campaign will use signage, informational materials, social media posts, flyers, and television spots to remind locals and tourists alike to remain mindful around railroad crossings. Taking basic precautions such as obeying warning signals and not engaging in distractions while in the vicinity of a railroad crossing can help to avert potentially tragic accidents.

We had an incredible turnout at our Route to 2050 MTP eTownhall, "Smarter Streets, Better Broward", on May 18 with more than 1,000 participants joining the conversation! Our esteemed panelists shared valuable insights on how we can improve traffic management in the county. We thank Broward Commissioner Beam Furr, Candace Gomez-Cluck from Movin' On, Scott Brunner from Broward County's Traffic Engineering Division, and Jonathan Overton from FDOT District 4 for their valuable insights. In the fast-paced world of transportation, infrastructure planning and management have become the top priority for many states, cities, and counties. And for those in Broward County, Florida, the Broward MPO has been at the forefront of addressing transportation needs and ensuring effective use of funds allocated for transportation projects.
On May 18, the Broward MPO's Executive Director, Greg Stuart, participated in a panel discussion organized by the Florida CCIM Fort Lauderdale Chapter. The event aimed to provide insights into the impact of transportation infrastructure on real estate development, as well as the challenges of financing, planning, and managing infrastructure projects.
"In Broward County, our primary goal is to improve mobility, safety, and sustainability. We want to provide options for people to move around the county in a convenient, reliable, and safe manner," said Stuart. "And we do this by working closely with our stakeholders, including local government agencies, community organizations, and private developers."
The discussion also touched on the importance of funding sources, such as grants, public-private partnerships, and bonding. Mr. Stuart emphasized the need to prioritize projects and focus on those that will have the most significant impact on the community.
