MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

According to AAA’s 2023 Memorial Day Travel Forecast, 2.4 million Floridians planned to travel more than 50 miles by car this holiday weekend. It's the perfect time to be reminded of the importance of rail safety as we hit the road for the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000. With the vast number of trains and railroad crossings in Broward County and beyond, understanding the importance of rail safety can save lives. Rail safety in Broward County involves not just following the law but also making sound judgment calls. All drivers and pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings and adhere to the signs and signals provided at every railroad crossing. Ignoring or violating these safety measures can lead to accidents and fatal collisions. In addition, every individual in the community can do their part in promoting rail safety by being responsible for their actions. Whether it's educating children about train safety or speaking up when others fail to follow the rules, it is crucial that everyone takes ownership of keeping Broward County's railroad crossings safe. There is no doubt that accidents at railroad crossings are entirely avoidable. Taking simple steps such as keeping your distance, paying attention, and understanding the signals can significantly decrease the risk of injury or even death. Ultimately, promoting rail safety requires everyone to work together, stay vigilant, and take action to protect each other's lives. The Broward MPO is proud to have launched "Don't Risk It," our new rail safety campaign aimed at educating the community about dangerous behavior around railroad tracks.

BROWARD MPO IN ACTION

New Broward MPO Rail Safety Campaign Makes Headlines Across South Florida

The Broward MPO launched our "Don't Risk It" rail safety campaign last week, and we're grateful to the many media outlets that covered it including the Sun Sentinel, NBC 6, WIOD, and CBS 4. The "Don't Risk It" campaign is a collaborative effort, developed with the help of cities including Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, and Hallandale Beach. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the potential risks associated with reckless behavior around trains and railroad crossings and reduce the climbing accident rate in the region. Watch the official campaign video below or click here to learn more!
