MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

I became a planner because I am fascinated with how cities work. Roads and highways connect cities, sidewalks link residences in neighborhoods, and then these systems come together to make the places we live in function seamlessly. Everything starts with a plan; studies, drawings, and programs have been created to make the places we live in what they are and shape where we are going. Just last week, the MPO Board approved the Draft Tentative Work Program – a $4.5 billion investment in Broward’s transportation system over the next five years. This document is not just a collection of projects, it's a representation of the hard work and dedication of those who strive to make Broward a more connected, safer, and resilient region. This document includes funding for regular road maintenance, road expansions, and neighborhood safety projects with the goals of keeping our roads functional and safe, reducing congestion, and ensuring everyone gets home safely. In addition to funding the projects we have committed to, we have added millions of dollars in newly awarded funding for two federal Community Funded Projects and for the Safe Streets & Roads for All grant. This is a great achievement to bring about a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation system to enhance the overall well-being of the community.

The Broward MPO team had a fantastic time last week at the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Four Office of Modal Development (OMD) Expo in Fort Lauderdale! The event gathered experts in the transportation industry, allowing us to share our programs, like the Route to 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), with FDOT staff and broaden our network. On October 31, the Broward MPO hosted a public hearing with the Broward Delegation. Chaired by State Senator Jason Pizzo, the event brought together over 100 attendees from all corners of our vibrant community. The public hearing provided a platform for different organizations to share their plans, ideas, and concerns about various issues facing Broward. The success of the public hearing underscores the MPO’s dedication to facilitating inclusive and constructive dialogues on Broward's future. We want to express our gratitude to Senator Pizzo, the members of the Broward Delegation, and the representatives of the various organizations that participated. National Aviation Month Spotlight:

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport

November is National Aviation Month, and the Broward MPO is joining the celebration by shining a light on the invaluable contributions of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to our local and state economy. A recent study released by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) reveals the considerable impact that FLL has on our economy. FLL contributes an impressive $15.4 billion and is responsible for creating over 110,000 jobs in our region. The airport is a bustling hive of activity, serving millions of passengers each year, creating countless job opportunities, and significantly contributing to our regional economic growth. FLL's strategic location close to Miami and West Palm Beach has helped propel it to one of the most popular airports in the country in terms of scheduled commercial flights and connectivity options. The airport provides over 700 daily flights, making it a central hub that connects 130 non-stop destinations across the globe. Beyond facilitating connectivity, FLL also plays an essential role for passengers journeying to the nearby Port Everglades. The port, recognized as one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, dramatically benefits from FLL's accessibility, making it easier for visitors to enjoy the beautiful sights and vibrant lifestyle our region offers. The airport is also a key part of the freight system, moving more than 100,000 tons of goods to and from local businesses annually and averaging over 8,000 tons each month. At the Broward MPO, we recognize that airports are more than just places where planes take off and land. They serve as significant economic engines, vital links for business and leisure travel, catalysts for job growth, and key players in our state's overall economic development strategy.
