Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart 

Last week, I had the honor of personally thanking our nation’s  Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, for the investments the federal government has made in our region. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIL) has or will fund $6.7 billion in transportation projects in Florida including roads, bridges, public transit, ports, and airports. This administration has provided millions of additional funds for safety, infrastructure, and training.  Transportation is what connects us all here in Broward County, from our major roadways to the sidewalks in our neighborhoods. Our role at the Broward MPO gives us the opportunity to contribute to our region’s transportation future through the millions of dollars we’ve received for safety, infrastructure, and training from this administration. Following is a list projects that we will undertake thanks to funds we’ve received. The BIL funding has allowed the access and creation of projects that will benefit our growing communities into the future. These significant financial commitments will enhance the well-being of Florida residents and set the stage for Florida’s success.

• Safe Streets and Roads for All – The Broward MPO is committed to funding projects that keep our streets and roadways safe for all. These projects will address traffic calming, intersection, technology development, (i.e. Complete Streets, Vision Zero,) railroad, mid-block/cyclist crossings, and pilot projects.  

• Railroad Crossing Elimination Program – This funding will support final design and construction activities for the Broward County Sealed Corridor Project. The project will include enhancements, such as exit gates and medians, at 21 grade crossings along Florida East Coast Railway's rail line, a freight rail corridor shared with Brightline's intercity passenger rail service.  

• Thriving Communities – This pilot program will fund capacity building, planning, and technical assistance to help our community partners create Complete Transit-Oriented Neighborhoods. 

• Member Directed Projects – The members of Congress representing our region have directed millions of dollars to transformative projects throughout Broward. 

We are grateful for the funding support our region has received and thank both Secretary Buttigieg and the members of Congress who represent South Florida for their commitment to improving the transportation landscape of our region.

Brightline Trains hosted U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on a ride from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale today! Local business leaders and elected officials joined him, including our Executive Director Greg Stuart, to discuss the federal government's investments in railways, ports, waterways, and airports. We're proud to have been part of this momentous occasion and thrilled to have our region recognized by the U.S. Department of Transportation!

Water Taxi: The Ultimate Alternative to Driving for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 

The highly anticipated Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is fast approaching, and for boat enthusiasts who want to beat the traffic and hassle of parking, Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi has a solution. The water taxi service is offering rides to and from the boat show, taking place from October 25 to October 29, to help people get there with ease. 

If you're unfamiliar with the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi, it's a unique way to get around the city. Hidden Disabilities to Light During

National Disability Employment Awareness Month  

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. It’s a crucial time for raising awareness about the value that individuals with disabilities bring to the workforce. In honor of this month, we're spotlighting the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This innovative program has been designed to help those with hidden disabilities get the support they need to thrive in the workplace. 

Hidden disabilities can be a significant barrier to employment. These disabilities, such as autism, anxiety, dyslexia, or depression, can be difficult to see, and many people may not even realize they have them. The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program seeks to change that by providing employees with a subtle but visible way to identify themselves as someone who may need additional support. The program involves the use of a sunflower lanyard, which employees can wear or attach to their name badges. The lanyard features a bright sunflower design that signifies the wearer has a hidden disability and may require assistance or understanding from colleagues. 

By wearing the lanyard, employees can help reduce stigma and increase awareness about hidden disabilities. This can lead to more inclusive workplaces where individuals feel comfortable sharing their challenges and asking for support when they need it, leading to greater job satisfaction, productivity, and retention.
