MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

Thomas Edison said, "Keep on the lookout for novel ideas that others have used successfully. Your idea has to be original only in its adaptation to the problem you're working on." Our region is unique: we have long summers with distinct weather, millions of tourists, and no where new to build. We look to innovative yet tested solutions to improve our transportation system for the current and next generation. Our region has seen exponential growth of Electric Vehicles (EV) usage, and we’ve almost caught up to other regions around the country. Our counterparts across the country have been actively enhancing their EV infrastructure in an ad hoc manner. But, we get to be strategic by learning from their mistakes and making investments that truly benefit the public. But we're not stopping there. Broward County is also leading the charge in adopting innovative transportation technologies that will revolutionize how we move people and goods. From smart roads that communicate with autonomous vehicles to on-demand ride sharing and e-bikes, the possibilities for a smarter, more efficient transportation network are endless. At the Broward MPO, we are dedicated to advancing transportation infrastructure that reflects our values of sustainability, accessibility, and safety. By leveraging emerging technologies and investing in alternative forms of transit, we can build a better future for our community.

BROWARD MPO IN ACTION

The Broward MPO is Electric 🟢

One of the emphasis areas for the Route to 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) is emerging technologies. Since the MTP sets funding priorities for the next 25 years, it is critical that the MPO be aware of the latest tools available that can improve the safety, reliability and resilience of our transportation system. As a living document, which is updated every five years and amended as needed, it can adapt to changing circumstances, which is important given the rapid development of technologies by the private sector. This topic covers a variety of issues from traffic monitoring equipment to flood detection sensors to alternative fuel corridors. One area of technology the MPO is leading is the identification of regional EV charging infrastructure and the transition of these facilities from fossil fuel to alternative fuel sources. The MPO is embarking on an Electric Vehicle Master Plan. This plan will help create a comprehensive network of electric vehicle charging locations along alternative fuel corridors in Broward County. Working with the South Florida Regional Planning Council, Florida Department of Transportation and other regional partners, the MPO was successful in expanding the alternative fuel corridors network in Broward, Monroe, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties. The MPO’s Electric Vehicle Master Plan will identify and rank potential future locations consistent with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Alternative Fuel Corridor Grant requirements. This plan will help in creating a comprehensive network of EV charging locations along alternative fuel corridors in Broward County and our region.  As the MPO considers investments in regional EV infrastructure, we will be looking to advance the use of solar panels and other energy sources for powering these charging stations.

Broward MPO Planning Team Hosts MTP Workshop

Exciting news! Broward MPO staff and the Technical Advisory Committee have taken the first step in prioritizing the Route to 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP). The August meeting was jam-packed with insightful discussions, led by our Principal Planner Christopher Restrepo, on proposed criteria and the weight of prioritization factors.

We're pleased to announce that all committee feedback will inform our approach as we develop the criteria, scoring, and weighting of this game-changing project. The MTP project prioritization process will set the foundation for future transportation improvements that will better serve our community for decades to come.

We can't wait to continue the dialogue on how to best prioritize these transportation projects. Stay tuned for more updates and make sure to get involved to help us create a transportation network that is equitable, accessible, and sustainable for all. To learn more about the MTP, click here.
