MOBILITY MONDAY

Message From Executive Director, Greg Stuart

Five years ago, when Brightline launched, the Orlando extension wasn’t more than a dotted line on a map. Last Friday I had the pleasure of riding Brightline’s inaugural train to Orlando. The round trip was over 400 miles, and I never touched a steering wheel. Through incremental planning efforts, we can make significant progress. All projects start with an idea. Partnerships, leadership, and a clear vision is what brings them to reality. This issue of Mobility Monday highlights our partnership with the City of Hollywood to create a resilient roadway where light rainfall won’t cause flooding. In addition, our leadership was recognized with an award for the MPO’s “Build a Better Mousetrap” safety program. Lastly, our clear vision is shown with our tour of South Florida rail.

BROWARD MPO IN ACTION

Broward MPO Wins Safety Award  🏆

🎉 Big news! 🎉 The Broward MPO has been named the winner of the 2022 Florida Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) “Build a Better Mousetrap” Competition for our new Off-System Safety Program in the "Innovative Project" category. We could not be more thrilled! Our partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Broward County Government has allowed us to develop this safety program, which supports our efforts towards Vision Zero. By identifying high-crash areas in our Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), we can develop two Roadway Safety Audits (RSA) per year, followed by project development and engineering for concepts in the RSAs. Safety projects are then delivered through various entities such as municipalities, FDOT, Broward County, or the Metro Transportation Engineering & Construction Cooperative. Thanks to this program, we hope to continue identifying, planning, and implementing safety projects through our existing project delivery process. We are so excited for the projects to become a reality!

Broward MPO Executive Director Greg Stuart to Speak at AMPO Conference This Week 📄

We are excited to announce that Greg Stuart, Executive Director of the Broward MPO, will be speaking at two panels at the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) conference this week!  In the first panel on September 26th, Greg will be discussing key procedures and guidelines that the MPO follows when applying for grants. He will share his expertise on the application process, including identifying eligible grants, developing a comprehensive plan, and the importance of collaboration and coordination among MPOs, local governments, and other stakeholders.

In the second panel, Greg will be presenting on the MPO's incredible efforts over the past two decades to identify a transit vision for the region, support funding for increased transit investment, implement supporting bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure, and enhance local land use policy through the designation of mobility hubs at strategic points in the transit network.  This has been a long-term effort, beginning in 1972 with the Broward Urban Design Study, and was advanced through the 2035, 2040, and 2045 long-range transportation plans. The presentation will also include a discussion of the Broward MPO's long-term transportation vision, known as Vision 2100, which continues to guide regional planning efforts related to enhanced transit, new transportation technologies, climate change, and new land use patterns. We are so proud of Greg and the Broward MPO's amazing work! Congratulations on this incredible opportunity to highlight the MPO’s work on a national stage!

Broward MPO Hosts Public Meetings

for Resiliency Study 📅

On September 13, the MPO, with the City of Hollywood, hosted its first of three public meetings for the Hollywood Boulevard Resiliency Study. Staff introduced the project, walking residents through the MPO’s Transportation Resiliency Framework and how it is being applied along the corridor. Residents had the opportunity to provide feedback on the corridor’s history and share experienced issues. The Study Team will continue to gather community input over the next few weeks to ensure a broad range of perspectives. A second public meeting will be hosted In January of 2024, to present alternatives developed for the feedback. Please click here for additional updates.
