Holtec Confirms Pilgrim Worker Was Contaminated
Reactor’s owner downplays incident while revising wastewater permit wording
Christine Legere Provincetown Independent June 19, 2024
An incident that exposed a worker at the shuttered Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station to airborne radioactive contamination was confirmed on June 14 by Patrick O’Brien, spokesman for Holtec International, the company that has been decommissioning the plant since 2019.
An anonymous letter about the incident, claiming that the worker in the reactor building was exposed to enough radioactivity to set off the plant’s radiation detection monitors at the facility’s access and egress points for several weeks, was sent to advocates at Cape Downwinders and to the Mass. Dept. of Public Health last month

Whistleblower Warns of Holtec Radiation Exposure

A whistleblower, who is apparently part of the team dismantling the shuttered Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth, has written another letter warning about the dangers to workers when the nuclear plant’s fuel rod cooling waters are evaporated into the atmosphere.
“Plant personnel working on the refuel floor who are exposed to the airborne contamination resulting from the evaporative water ‘disposal’ process, have repeatedly asked the Holtec radiation protection manager and supervisor how much internal radiation they are receiving,” the whistleblower wrote.
“Radiation protection technicians assigned to the refuel floor have stated that the technical staff that were responsible for planning work, and determining the radiation exposure of plant workers, had their positions eliminated due to cost-cutting efforts.”

Worker at Pilgrim Exposed to Enough Radiation to Set Off Alarms
Jennette Barnes,WCAI June 12, 2024
A worker at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station has been exposed to radiation — enough to set off an alarm as the person went to leave the radiologically controlled area of the reactor building.
The recent exposure came to light via an anonymous letter sent to activist group Cape Downwinders, postmarked May 14. A second copy went to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The source of the letter is unknown, but Pilgrim owner Holtec International has confirmed that an exposure occurred.
