FACTORY FORUM:
A Parent's Guide to Having
A Young Performer
ONLINE EVENT THIS SUNDAY
Getting started in the entertainment industry can seem quite overwhelming, especially for a parent of a gifted child wanting to work in the entertaining industry.

The Actor Factory has invited special guest Arianne Martin, mother of child actor Julian Hilliard, of Marvel fame and more, to offer her special forum, A Parent's Guide to Having A Young Performer.

The event will be held live online, via Zoom, for parents only, this Sunday, October 16, from 3:00-5:00 pm Central time.

This intimate talk and Q & A, moderated by Factory Director and Founder Chris Freihofer, will cover the ins and outs of what you need to know, and how to be your child's best advocate when getting started in film and television, not only in smaller markets, but in the large markets as well.

Arianne Martin is a Texas born actress/filmmaker. Her career in the entertainment industry spans almost 20 years in a variety of projects, from critically acclaimed televisions shows to award winning indies. She was recently in Oklahoma filming a supporting role in the film FANCY DANCE.
Arianne is the mother of child actor, Julian Hilliard (Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, and WANDAVISION, as well as memorable roles in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, THE CONJURING 3 and more.

She has first hand experience in this specific aspect of the entertainment industry and wants to help other parents by sharing her knowledge gained on this exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) journey.
What's a Coogan Account? How do you get an Agent? What about an agent in a larger market? Do you need a manager? What's a call sheet?

How do you manage this industry and still have a life?

What about having time to just be a normal kid?

Come with your questions and concerns, and Arianne will ease your mind.

Cost for the event is $40 per person. (Prices are for parents in one household, and are not intended for groups. Recording this event is prohibited.)

SPECIAL NOTE: All sales are final. There are no refunds once a purchase is made. If the event is rescheduled, all participants will be offered a refund if attending the new date is not possible.

Self Tape Tune-Up Online Class Begins Tonight!
SELF TAPE TUNEUP with Los Angeles casting associate Tiffany Feese.
4-week online class Mondays, 7:30-9:00 pm CST beginning October 10.

Get professional feedback and tips on your self taping skills from a casting professional who spends her days watching self tapes from across the country. A very valuable class.

Each week, students will upload a self tape and receive notes and thoughts not just on production quality, camera placement, lighting, sound, etc., but also in performance. Is your tape grabbing the attention of the viewer, or will it be quickly skimmed? Get Tiffany's advice on what holds her attention, and gets her to pass some tapes on to the directors, while viewing up to hundreds of tapes per day.

Tiffany is a Los Angeles-based Casting Associate at Beverly Holloway Casting, a former associate at Freihofer Casting, and is a SAG-AFTRA member with a BFA in Creative Media Production.

Her class is joined by other industry professionals as guest coaches, including other casting peers, agents, managers and more.

ASK THE FOREMAN
Factory Director & Founder Chris Freihofer answers your industry questions
I have a resume question for you. At what point should an actor add a job to their resume? When they book the job, when it starts filming, or when production wraps?-- Mattea W., Oklahoma City

If you booked it, put it on your resume. A booking is a booking, even if you are cut out of the final edit. Include that booking with pride. NDA's may, and should, prevent you from posting about it on social media, but resumes and casting profiles are intended to be contained within the industry, and it should be fine. If you have any concern about the NDA, just ask the producer if it is ok to include on your resume and not on social media.

I only have a couple of Principal credits on my resume. Should I bulk it up with a couple of select extra roles from major releases or leave them off the resume completely? - Chris C., Oklahoma City.

Two schools of thought, there. One might say that yes, putting some background work on your resume, especially in major releases, is great to show you have been on set and understand the job when you are starting out your on-camera career. However, some agents may advise you at some point to remove your background work and only list your principal role credits. The other school of thought is presenting yourself as an experienced and skilled actor, whose career as a background performer is behind them.

That's not to say doing and listing background work is ill-advised. Any chance to be on set can be a great learning experience (though some often don't take advantage of that), and you never know where it can lead. But the resume is a tool used to sell you as a professional actor, so list your credits with that in mind.

If an actor gained their SAG eligibility in Oklahoma (a right-to-work state), and then booked a SAG project in a state that’s NOT right-to-work (like CA or NM), are they required to become a SAG member even if they’re legally a Oklahoma resident? If so, would their dues be that of an OK actor, or would they have to pay the other state’s initiation fee/dues? - Kaye BF, Tulsa

Oklahoma is Right-to-Work, which essentially means you cannot be forced to join a union to work on a union job site. However, some states are union-friendly, with more strict union rules. For actors, it means you get a free pass on your first SAG-AFTRA job principal contract, which earns your eligibility. But on the second job, you are required to either join SAG-AFTRA or turn down the work.

You are required to follow the union rules in the state the work is performed, not your state of residence. So to answer your question, after earning your eligibility, you would be required to join the union on any subsequent job performed in a union-friendly state. Currently, those states are WA, OR, CA, MT, CO, NM, MN, IL, MO, OH, PA, NY, VT, NH, MA, ME, RI, CT, NJ, MD, DE. All the rest are Right-to-Work.

Chris Freihofer is an actor, as well as Oklahoma's leading casting director for film and television. He is a longtime member of SAG-AFTRA, and the Casting Society of America. He was named an Oklahoma Film Icon in 2016, is the recipient of the CSA's 2021 Artios Award for his Location Casting work on the Oscar-winning film MINARI, and this year was listed on the Journal Record's Oklahoma Film Industry Power List. In 2009 he opened The Actor Factory and has personally curated the experts to provide the training at the studio.
