2017: Time for a New
You at The Factory
Happy 2017!
Now is the time for New Year Resolutions, a time to rededicate and refocus your goals, ambitions and dreams. We at The Actor Factory are here to help.
Don't wait for "Hollywood to come calling". Hollywood is here and it's time for you to be ready.
"We worked on 7 union feature films in 2016, 3 non-union films and a union television series," said Chris Freihofer, Oklahoma's leading casting director for film and television and owner of The Actor Factory. "I know there were at least 4 other films that shot here last year we didn't work on and that doesn't mention the dozens and dozens of regional and national commercials we cast, just in 2016. We are already prepping our first two films of 2017, both to be shot by the end of February, and are in talks for at least two others. Add to the Oklahoma productions all the projects that shoot in Texas and surrounding areas, and other regional areas. If you are looking to get into on-camera acting, opportunities are here and the time is now."
Whether it's time to take that first step in taking your first acting class, or if you are out of practice and need to sharpen your skills, there is no time like the present. Why not consider a class at Oklahoma's largest and most respected on-camera acting studio. Since 2009, actors across Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri have studied with The Factory's respected and qualified instructors, as well as the amazing guests artists that provide weekend intensives. We have seen Factory students go on to appear in major feature film, on network television series, and in films and TV episodes all across the country. They have won awards at festivals, gained notoriety, and started the career they always dreamed of.
The Actor Factory offers classes and weekend intensives for aged 5-105. The January session of weekly classes begins as early as next week. There are still some seats available (see the bottom of this email). Visit
TheActorFactory.com to view the classes we offer for
Adults and for
Young Performers.

2016: Factory
Students Look Back
We recently sent emails asking Actor Factory students about the past year. The media and acting industry has been so focused lately on the numerous losses we have experienced in 2016, we wanted our students to share their successes over the past 12 months, their thoughts about the Factory, and anything they wanted to share. Here are just some of our dozens of responses:
STEPHEN GOODMAN:
I got to screen a film at Comic Con (Heroes Of The Realm.) I was part of a film that won best Oklahoma Feature at Deadcenter film festival and sold out the Alamo Draft House at Austin Film Festival (Electric Nostalgia.)
But the most important thing to remember, is that without the Factory, I could not have done these things. Kato, Darryl, and the foreman (Chris Freihofer) himself brought out the vulnerability side of me that I always wanted to hide. You guys taught me not to run away from that. Once I stood my ground and let it find me, I started booking and had the greatest year of my career.
DAVID LEE ANDERSON: I look forward to every class, every forum, every Film Club event with excitement, anticipation and fulfillment. Yes, I finally booked a principal role in a SAG film after auditioning and attending classes for three years. I booked my own principal role in an independent film this year. I've also been an extra or featured extra in twelve other films and four commercials in a three and a half year period. I received my SAG-AFTRA eligibility on THE MUSTANGER & THE LADY (and) acquired an agent. The classes, forums and intensives have honed my talents and skills over time with increasing effort on the part of the Actor Factory to make the most professional and best trained actors in the state of Oklahoma, and possibly the region. The year of 2016 has been the best yet. I have no complaints about this past year, truthfully.
MARY KATHRYN BRYANT:
2016 gave me confidence!!! I booked my first principal role which made me SAG eligible (Sarah in CHILDREN OF THE CORD!! And knowing my Factory family would always have my back gave me the extra push I needed to make a life changing move!! I LOVE the Actor Factory and the people behind it!!!
TERRY KINGSBERY: I learned a great deal from the classes and concentrated seminar workshops that I took for the Actor Factory. I did get a small, but fun, Featured Extra part in Jake Gyllenhall's new movie WILDLIFE and actually got my first acting paycheck. (can't quit my day job yet). I do plan on extending my acting experiences in 2017 and look forward to learning more from the Actor Factory.
CHRIS CRANE: I did book a principal in local filmmakers Ryan Bellgardt's new film GREMLIN as the Police Chief. Last year I earned eligibility when cast in GOSNELL. I also made it to a call back for a big Energy company's commercial. And all because of what I have learned as part of the Actor Factory family. I look forward to taking more intensives this year. Occasionally I will frustrate myself by not bringing what I have learned to the audition but these times are becoming less frequent. I think the improv and audition intensive would do me some good as well as Darryl's advanced class.
SIDNEY FLACK:
Yes, I booked a few principal roles in 2016. IF LOOKS COULD KILL, premiered December 31 on Lifetime Movie Network. CHILDREN OF THE CORN: RUNAWAY, (my) 2nd SAG/AFTRA credit. THE HARVESTERS premiered in LA for Halloween. Producers flew me out so my character could verbally assault the audience. (I earned by SAG-AFTRA eligibility) that last year with GOSNELL. Through the workout classes with Darryl and Kato, and the workshops with Ricki and Sarah, I have been able to resurrect, polish off, and most importantly, deepen the skills cultivated in me by my mentors at Carnegie Mellon University 40 years ago. It has been a delightful challenge. I tell everyone who asks that the well of talent in Oklahoma is due in no small part to the resources, training, and support available from The Actor Factory. I know that you want each of us to succeed. My old friend, (Michael) Alexander Cook said years ago, he didn't want to be the best actor; he wanted to be a great actor. That's what I see you and The Actor Factory helping all of us to be, great actors.
ALLY GREER: I got to be in Planet Thunder's 48 Hour Film and won Best Supporting Actress, which was a shock. Really hoping to go to Filmapalooza to represent it in the spring! Other than that, it was certainly a slow year for me as far as getting jobs. No SAG-AFTRA eligibility for me. That is my primary goal for 2017! Coming from theatre, I was a little shaky in front of the camera. Darryl has really worked with me to gain comfortability and finding my own style, and I'm excited to take more classes next year at The Factory. I think classes have really helped me feel more relaxed and have helped with auditions for schools in NYC, I am accepted into the Atlantic Theater Company's Acting School next fall, and I'm about to audition for Juilliard in a few weeks. Although I'm super nervous, it's something I've always wanted to do and have not felt prepared to do so until this year. Thanks, Factory teachers! BYN ALWAYS: I took Chris' Audition for Film intensive late in 2015. It was a turning point for me, but such bad timing that I had to once again bury the spark I felt. It did give me clarity that acting/the film industry is where my deepest dreams lie. I was astounded when my visit back to the states lined up perfectly with another Actor factory workshop. This time with Matt Barry. The weekend was amazing. Inspiring beyond words and shifted my thinking, my attitude in ways I couldn't have imagined. What I thought would be a 'fun' weekend to take another small step towards acknowledging my dream, just a little (I mean, come on, who decides that acting is their dream at 45?) became a turning point. It affected my life in so many ways that I didn't expect. I finally accepted that my dreams were valid. That they were okay and that I *could* do this. It pulled me out of a 5 year depressive slump that I had been floundering in for Years. By the end of the weekend, I felt alive and hopeful... and I can tell you, that is a rare thing for me when it comes to my own dreams. I could go on and list a ton of things that have changed in the last couple of months, but suffice it to say that my time at the Actor Factory has been nothing but inspiring and uplifting in addition to being incredibly informative and encouraging. I am looking forward to my weekly class starting in January!
GLENDA RADIGONDA:
My training at The Actor Factory has been paramount in my success at becoming a better actor. I will begin 2017 the most confident I have ever been. I've had casting directors, producers, film directors and fellow actors praise my performances. My growth and confidence is fully credited to all the amazing people I've had the privilege to work with at The Actor Factory. SAG-AFTRA eligibility and principal roles will all come in good time. Thanks for giving me so many opportunities to hone this craft I love so much. Keep those opportunities coming because I plan to work even harder in 2017!
MELISSA HAMMER:
I wanted to share some positive news with you. Even though I haven't booked roles (my lack of trying) or earned eligibility I wanted to let you know how much I look forward to attending classes at The Factory. Over the past year I have met so many warm, fun, and talented individuals who are always supportive and uplifting. I always look forward to coming to the factory, it truly is a "safe place" to learn and grow. I know on a personal level my experience with The Actor Factory and the Family has made a very positive impact on my life. Thanks to all for being kind fantastic peeps!
LAUREN WINDLE: I do like the teaching at the Actor Factory. My favorite part is the small classes. It gives time for the instructor to speak to all the students. I'm not quite sure if any of the classes have led to any of the auditions I have gotten, however I do believe they have helped me when I do go to the audition!
JOHNNY HORN:
Has the Actor Factory helped? Duh!!! The Actor Factory has been my life line!! From film acting fundamentals to auditioning to film set etiquette to business and promotion to making relevant connections, the Actor Factory has paved the way. I could not be more grateful!
VIVIAN GLAZIER:
This past fall I booked two non-union commercials and Sally in STARBRIGHT. While the scene has been cut from the film, it was still a great experience and opportunity. Plus I gained my SAG eligibility which is awesome! I definitely feel like the Demo Reel camp that I did at the Actor Factory greatly attributed to my successes. The Actor factory is a tremendous resource for anyone wanting to be an actor. I became a lot more comfortable being on camera and being myself in an audition room. I really want to take another class at the Actor factory in the spring after I finish rehearsals for Love's Labour's Lost.
LEESA NEIDEL:
I'm super proud of what I accomplished this year, and I owe it all to the Actor Factory! I booked a lead role in the movie "Telekinetic" this summer and it filmed during the fall in Austin! It was a great experience in every way possible. Let me say...I know for certain, I could not have done that role to the ability that I did it, without the training and knowledge I've gained from the Factory....absolutely no way I could have! Not only do I feel that you guys have opened a whole new world of wonderful opportunities for me, but the friends and positive relationships I found there are priceless to me. Thank you for everything! I can't wait to see what 2017 holds for all my actor friends and myself. I have definitely changed since beginning my journey (which started at the Factory 2 years ago- I don't know how it's possible that it's been that long!!) ...now I don't wonder if great things are possible- I KNOW they are, and I have experienced it and can feel that more is on its way! I seriously love you all to pieces, you and everyone up there are so good to me and so many others! I wish many blessings for every single one of you!!
DREW POLLOCK:
Grateful to have booked the following in 2016: Co-star on "DAY 5" webisode produced by Rooster Teeth in Austin, Co-lead on "TEMPO" short film written and produced by OKC local, Nick Dillard, Supporting on "The Mustanger And The Lady" feature film by James Cotten, Principal on "STARBRIGHT" feature film by Francesco Lucente, Stunt-Double on "STARBRIGHT", Co-lead on "Fair Shake Transfer" short film written/directed/produced by Joshua Morris in Dallas, Principal on "YOU PEOPLE" feature film by OK local Laron Chapman.
VERY HOPEFUL FOR OPPORTUNITIES IN 2017 Extremely grateful for the training offered by Chris Freihofer's THE ACTOR FACTORY. To grow as an actor and develop my range I have to get out of my comfort zone. Taking classes and workshops at the Actor Factory continually affords me that opportunity. It also allows me to interact with my favorite people: ACTORS !!!!!!
We hope 2017 is your best year yet. We hope we get to see you at The Actor Factory (or at one of our traveling weekend intensives). Here's to looking ahead!

ACTING TIP:
The Useful Tool
of Improvisation
Rebecca McCauley has taught Improv Technique at The Actor Factory since 2009. Unlike any other improv class, this one focuses less on comedy club performance and more on using improv in on-set situations for film, television and even auditions. It even helps shy individuals in public or social settings. Here, she shares her thoughts on the importance of improvisation skills.
By Rebecca McCauley
Why do actors need improvisation?
A lot of actors find comfort in following the game plan laid out by the director. But what do you do when the direction is to improvise? It can be a paralyzing and scary place, if you don't have the creative inquiry skills that come with improv training.
Actors are frequently hired because they can keep going when no one yells "cut"-- effortlessly inhabiting the character and the world of the piece. That sounds like magic to anyone who has panicked when asked to "just make something up."
The process of building a character that belongs to you begins before you even audition. Audition material can be sparse, and it's hard to see the big picture. If you endeavor then to ask key questions of your creative self about who and how this character is, you will bring that person to life. You can deliver in a steady, real way no matter what is asked of you.
Improvisation work builds this ability and accesses your imagination in a way that feels like playing did when you were a kid. It's a pathway to freedom and creativity beyond the nuts and bolts of professional acting. It can carbonate your work and make you feel better doing it. It gives you the power to know when there are no answers offered.
Improv Technique, taught by Rebecca McCauley, is offered to adults aged 18+ Sundays from 4-6 om for 8 weeks. The next session begins January 15. Teen Improv, a high-energy, fun and funny class for kids aged 10-15, taught by Zach Delaune and Tiffany Feese, is offered Sundays from 6:30-8 pm beginning January 15.
