ASK THE FOREMAN
Factory Director & Founder Chris Freihofer answers your industry questions

Something I am rather curious about--should we come to an audition dressed (to some extent) as the character we are portraying? I have seen notes from other casting directors which state to come suggesting your character and, though it's enjoyable, I'm wondering if Production sees that as acceptable, helpful or unnecessary and distracting. I realize it may depend on the extent of the costuming but would really like to get your insight on this! Thanx!
-- Debbi T., Tulsa OK
Great question. And yes, your instincts are right; it depends on the extent of the costuming. Dress to suggest the role, but don't go too far out of the way. A lawyer should probably not audition in a t-shirt and jeans, and a person down on their luck likely wouldn't be in a crisp polo shirt. Give us the idea of the character without trying too hard.
A military role? Maybe an olive drab t-shirt, or something, but probably not a full uniform, unless you happen to have one. 18th Century storyline? Don't rent something from your local costume shop. Perhaps just a high neckline and a little more buttoned up.
In the commercial world, costuming is a little more accepted and even appreciated by certain ad agency creative directors. I have seen people in lab coats and stethoscopes audition for doctor roles. That's kind of a given. But some actors have gone so far as to make ID badges with their photo and the name of the hospital being advertised. While that is fun for the client, it might suggest that the actor has a little too much free time.
Don't stress about what to wear to the audition. Put the energy and focus on scene, character and intention and just have the best audition for the role. That's the best way to make yourself undeniable.
